Loaded. Stacked. Smokin’. This website admittedly threw around
those superlatives to describe the field for Saturday’s Grade 2, $500,000 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct.
With four top-level winners and five millionaires and even a
decamillionaire among the 11 horses entered, it is as if a case is being made
for this race to have its Grade 1 status restored after losing it after 2022.
Cigar Mile: In-depth preview of Saturday’s race.
Post Time and Señor Buscador and Book’em Danno and Mullikin
bring their good names to the feature on a program that also includes points
preps for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks (G1) among four graded stakes.
The New York card stands out on a Saturday when six graded races
will be run, including an Oaks prep at Los Alamitos and a stayers race at
Woodbine.
Saturday
Cigar Mile Handicap (G2), Aqueduct, 1 mile, 3-year-olds
and up
Post Time comes in with the momentum of an impressive rally
to finish second in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and earn a 102 Beyer Speed
Figure, according to Daily Racing Form. After finishing second in the
2023 Cigar Mile, Señor Buscador earned most of his $12,941,427 by winning the
Saudi Cup (G1), the world’s richest race. Book’em Danno took the Woody Stephens
(G1) in June at Saratoga. Mullikin finished first in the Forego (G1) to cap a
four-race winning streak. Locked, a Grade 1 victor as a 2-year-old, came off a
nearly one-year break to win a seven-furlong allowance in October at Aqueduct.
Coastal Mission became a millionaire when he scored last out in the Forty Niner
(G3) over the same one-turn mile as Saturday’s race. There is no question this
race is punching above its December weight.

Remsen (G2), Aqueduct, 1 1/8 miles, 2-year-olds, Kentucky
Derby 10-5-3-2-1 points prep
Eoin Harty, who saddled First Resort for a victory Saturday
in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2), is in position to win another Derby prep with
another Godolphin homebred. Poster, a Munnings colt who is 2-for-2, makes the
move from turf to dirt and graduates from an allowance score last out. Studlydoright
already has six races to his name, including his first-place finish Nov. 2 in
the Nashua over the same course and distance as the Remsen. Keewaydin comes in
off a maiden-breaking effort that was worth a 91 Beyer, the best in the Remsen
field. Last year Dornoch beat Sierra Leone by a nose in this race, a prelude to
their combined four Grade 1 triumphs in 2024.

Demoiselle (G2), Aqueduct, 1 1/8 miles, 2-year-old fillies,
Kentucky Oaks 10-5-3-2-1 points prep
Muhimma was an odds-on favorite in each of her first two
races. She did not disappoint her backers, stalking the early pace each time on
the way to wins of 7 1/2 lengths in her 6 1/2-furlong debut and by seven last
month going seven furlongs in an a-other-than allowance. Trained by Brad Cox
and ridden by Florent Géroux, the $700,000 Munnings filly owned by Shadwell
Stable ships for the first time from Churchill Downs and adds a second turn for
the first time. Cox already has high-profile victories this fall with Immersive
in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and Good Cheer on Saturday in the Golden
Rod (G2). He apparently will not be lacking for quality and depth in his bid
for a third triumph in the Oaks.

Go for Wand (G3), Aqueduct, 1 mile, fillies and mares,
3-year-olds and up
Tizzy in the Sky is 7: 4-2-0 at Aqueduct and 5: 0-2-0
everywhere else, namely Saratoga, Belmont Park and Gulfstream Park. After
nearly seven months on trainer Todd Pletcher’s bench, the 5-year-old Sky Kingdom
mare is in search of her first win since she ran off by nine lengths in the 1
1/8-mile Top Flight Invitational at the Big A. Occult finished a distant second
to Eclipse Award winner Idiomatic nearly two months ago in the Spinster (G1).
She is trained by Chad Brown as is Grade 3 winner Shidabhuti, who finished
first in a seven-furlong allowance Oct. 13 at Keeneland.

Starlet (G2), Los Alamitos, 1 1/16 miles, 2-year-old
fillies, Kentucky Oaks 10-5-3-2-1 points prep
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has won the last seven
runnings of the Starlet and 10 times overall, including three at Hollywood
Park. He nominated 13 fillies for this year’s renewal and said he would breeze
them Monday before siding who would run. The Los Alamitos racing office
identified six of them as probable, including Del Mar Debutante (G1) winner
Tenma and Sorrento (G3) victor Nooni. If anyone breaks Baffert’s streak, it
could be Vodka with a Twist or Practical Dream. A stakes winner for trainer
Phil D’Amato, the Thousand Words filly was second to Immersive in the Breeders’
Cup Juvenile Fillies. Practical Dream, a daughter of Practical Joke, won the listed
Desi Arnaz on Nov. 16 for trainer Tim Yakteen.

Valedictory (G3), Woodbine, 1 1/2 miles, synthetic,
3-year-olds and up
U.S. and Canada Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse has won this
race six times and is trying to do it for the third year in a row, this time
with enigmatic Get Smokin and class jumping Junipero Serra. Get Smokin won last
year’s 1 1/2-mile Kentucky Turf Cup (G2) and got up by a nose in the United
Nations (G2) at Monmouth Park. This is the same 7-year-old gelding who lost by
17 1/4 lengths trying to repeat at Kentucky Downs, and then he folded from
first to last in the final three furlongs of the 1 1/2-mile Joe Hirsch Turf
Classic (G1) on Sept. 28 at Aqueduct. Junipero Serra, a 4-year-old Noble
Mission gelding, was bumped at the break last out before he made up six places
and 10 1/4 lengths to finish fifth in a 1 1/16-mile allowance. That was on the
troubled Woodbine Tapeta, where he was a two-time winner this summer.
