Hit Show brings his late-season bid for a division championship
into the Grade 2 Clark Stakes, and 10 juveniles are entered in the final points
prep beneath the twin spires for Kentucky Derby 2025. They highlight the end of
the fall meet at Churchill Downs, where six graded stakes will be run during the
long holiday weekend.
Del Mar closes its autumn calendar with six graded tests. The
Hollywood Derby and the Matriarch, both on turf, will be the country’s last
Grade 1s before winter.
This week’s 13 graded stakes start with a pair of Thanksgiving
races at Churchill Downs.
Thursday
Falls City (G3), Churchill Downs, 1 1/8 miles, fillies
and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Tarifa had trouble at the start of last month’s Mother Goose
at Aqueduct, but she persevered to win by a head. That was the 3-year-old
Bernardini filly’s third Grade 2 victory in as many tries this year. The
Godolphin homebred who is trained by Brad Cox will face older rivals for the
first time. They include Musical Mischief, a 4-year-old Into Mischief filly who
comes back from a two-month break since she pulled off a 16-1 upset for trainer
Michael McCarthy in the Locust Grove (G2) at Churchill Downs. With those recent
victories at 1 1/16 miles, Tarifa and Musical Mischief earned identical Beyer
Speed Figures of 88, according to Daily Racing Form. Musical Mischief
will carry three fewer pounds than Tarifa on Thursday.

Cardinal (G3), Churchill Downs, 1 1/8 miles, turf, fillies
and mares, 3-year-olds and up
The 11 entrants for this race are a combined 3-for-26 in
stakes this year, including 1-for-11 in graded races. Implicated was the one exception.
Trained by Brendan Walsh, she won June 29 in the one-mile Nassau (G2) at Woodbine.
The 4-year-old daughter of Connect followed that triumph with
next-to-last-place finishes off Lasix in the Ladies Turf (G3) at Kentucky Downs
and the First Lady (G1) at Keeneland. Quality Star, a 5-year-old Animal Kingdom
mare, won the Ellis Park Turf two starts back, her only victory since April
2023 for Paulo Lobo. Magical Lute, a 4-year-old Maclean’s Music filly, was an
odds-on winner July 5 in the Iowa Distaff at Prairie Meadows. Last month Ian
Wilkes raced her on turf for the first time. She finished a close third at 20-1
in a $140,000 allowance at Keeneland.

Clark (G2), Churchill Downs, 1 1/8 miles, 3-year-olds and
up
Hit Show found his flow this summer, turning into a
three-race winning streak that he carries into the headline race of the
Churchill Downs fall meet. The 4-year-old Candy Ride colt trained by Cox has
strung together victories in the West Virginia Governor’s (G3) at Mountaineer,
the Lukas Classic (G2) in the slop at Churchill Downs and the Fayette (G2) last
month at Keeneland, earning respective Beyers of 97, 98 and 93. In a muddled
division of older dirt males, the millionaire owned by Sheikh Tamim of Qatar has
raced himself into the championship conversation.

Poolside With Slim and Pharoah’s Wine, who finished one-two
last month in the one-mile Valley View (G2) at Keeneland, will be rematched
with fourth-place finisher Simply in Front in what is scheduled to be the final
turf stakes of this fall meet. Trained by Rusty Arnold, Poolside With Slim is a
Churchill filly who is 1-for-3 in graded stakes. Front-running Pharoah’s Wine, who
was caught at the eighth pole carrying 25-1 odds in the Valley View, is 4:
0-2-0 for Dale Romans. Simply in Front, a daughter of Summer Front, lost by only
1 1/2 lengths in the Valley View. She was coming back from her triumph despite
a poor start in the 6 1/2-furlong Music City (G2) at Kentucky Downs.

Hollywood Turf Cup (G2), Del Mar, 1 1/2 miles, turf,
3-year-olds and up
Quietly toiling in the allowance ranks for most of the last year, Truly Quality burst onto the stakes scene this summer with a win in the Colonial Cup in Virginia. That was against only three rivals. But then the 4-year-old gelding by Quality Road validated his role as the 8-5 favorite in the Singspiel (G3) last month at Woodbine by taking a wide trip to a three-quarter-length victory. Trained by Jonathan Thomas, Truly Quality will be tested by the likes of Grade 1 winner Rockemperor and John Henry Turf Championship (G2) victor Cabo Spirit, both millionaires.

Kentucky Jockey Club (G2), Churchill Downs, 1 1/16 miles,
2-year-olds, Kentucky Derby 10-5-3-2-1 points prep
Stakes winners Jonathan’s Way, He’s Not Joking and Tiztastic
are among the 10 juveniles entered in this final Churchill Downs points prep
for Kentucky Derby 2025. Jonathan’s Way, a Vekoma colt trained by Phil Bauer,
earned 10 qualifying points and a 90 Beyer on Sept. 14 when he won the Iroquois
(G3). He comes back from a seventh-place disappointment going two turns for the
first time in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He’s Not Joking, a son of Practical
Joke trained by Josie Carroll, dominated the Grey (G3) three weeks ago on the Tapeta
at Woodbine. Tiztastic, a Tiz the Law colt from Steve Asmussen’s barn, won the $1
million Juvenile Mile on the Kentucky Downs turf before placing a distant
second last month in the Street Sense (G3) over the same course and 1 1/16-mile
distance as Saturday’s race.

Golden Rod (G2), Churchill Downs, 1 1/16 miles,
2-year-old fillies, Kentucky Oaks 10-5-3-2-1 points prep
By Medaglia d’Oro out of Street Sense mare Wedding Toast,
Godolphin homebred Good Cheer has an impressive pedigree. She also has a
3-for-3 record with wins by 8 1/4, 17 and 4 3/4 lengths. Her triumph for Cox last month in the listed Rags to Riches earned her an 86
Beyer. It was accomplished over the same 1 1/16 miles of main track that she
will be asked to navigate in the Golden Rod, the last Churchill Downs points
prep for the May 2 Kentucky Oaks (G1). Good Cheer’s stablemate Éclatant, a Stonestreet
homebred by Into Mischief, carries a 2-for-2 record into her stakes debut.

Two-time stakes winner Alpine Princess takes her third swing at graded company when she faces Demoiselle (G2) victor Life Talk and Monmouth Oaks (G3) winner Scalable, both from the Todd Pletcher barn. Trained by Cox, Alpine Princess was a 9 3/4-length winner last out Sept. 29 in the Remington Park Oaks. Last year the Classic Empire filly won the Untapable at Fair Grounds to wrap up her juvenile campaign. Pretty Ana, who lost by only a neck finishing third to Tarifa in the Mother Goose (G2), was entered by trainer Chad Brown.

Already a two-time Grade 1 winner, Carson’s Run was a three-quarter-length victor in the Jockey Club Derby Invitational (G3) last month at Aqueduct. Trained by Christophe Clément, the Cupid colt has won three of his last four starts, including the Saratoga Derby Invitational (G1). Carson’s Run was among the 10 horses listed Sunday by the Del Mar racing office as possible entrants. So are Formidable Man and Stay Hot, who finished one-two Sept. 1 in the Del Mar Derby (G2). Formidable Man is 3-for-3 at the seaside track.

Seabiscuit Handicap (G2), Del Mar, 1 1/16 miles, turf,
3-year-olds and up
There is no lack of balanced depth among the possible starters for this race. Sumter and Me Hermano Ramón, who finished a neck apart in that order at the front of last month’s one-mile Lure Stakes at Santa Anita, could meet again. Seal Team, who was fifth in the Lure, won the Twilight Derby (G2) two starts back. Almendares, the runner-up in both the Del Mar Mile (G2) and City of Hope Mile (G2), and Easter, last year’s Seabiscuit winner, could line up for trainer Phil D’Amato. Redistricting, a narrow second last month in the Knickerbocker (G3) at Aqueduct, could loom large if he is shipped west by Brown to make just his second start after a 10-month break.

fillies
Supa Speed, a $460,000 yearling purchase last fall, was a debut winner who had excuses in her next two starts for trainer John Sadler. The Justify filly reared in the gate before she managed a runner-up finish in the September running of the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf. On the Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup undercard, she was bumped at the start and checked no fewer than four times before she capitulated to a 12th-place finish against males in the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. She might be rematched with Sea Runner. The Gun Runner filly took third in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf before breaking her maiden for trainer Tim Yakteen early last month at Santa Anita.

Matriarch (G1), Del Mar, 1 mile, turf, fillies and mares,
3-year-olds and up
Gina Romantica has three Grade 1 triumphs to her name at Keeneland, including a repeat in the First Lady in her most recent start Oct. 5. She would be paying her first visit to Del Mar and only her second to California. Last year she finished a close fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita. With $1,786,228 in earnings for owner Peter Brant, the 5-year-old Into Mischief mare has hit the board in each of her last three starts for Brown. She was third July 13 in the Diana (G1), losing by only three-quarters of a length. Then she was second by only a neck to Beauté Cachée as the odds-on favorite in the Ballston Spa (G2).

Cecil B. DeMille (G3), Del Mar, 1 mile, turf, 2-year-olds
Pali Kitten is the only two-time winner among the early possibilities for this race. Trained by Doug O’Neill, the Vino Rosso colt was a 13-1 winner Oct. 5 in the Speakeasy at Santa Anita. Sent off at 55-1 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, Pali Kitten was a non-threatening 11th in the field of 12. Kale’s Angel is a maiden winner who Peter Miller put into a pair of autumn stakes only to finish out of the money.
