First Look: 8 stakes may include late hopefuls for Breeders’ Cup

They may not be a formal part of the challenge series, but
stakes this week at Keeneland still might be springboards to the Breeders’ Cup
next month at Del Mar.
Mawj won last year’s Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup three weeks before she lost by just a nose to Master of The Seas in the
Breeders’ Cup Mile. She and Lindy came out of the QEII and wound up in
California three weeks later. Tony Ann and Caravel graduated from the top two
in the Franklin (G2) to racing in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.
In addition to the six graded stakes at Keeneland, Aqueduct
and Woodbine, the week offers two high-profile state-bred races at Laurel Park
and Charles Town.
Friday
Sycamore (G3), Keeneland, 1 1/2 miles, turf, 3-year-olds
and up
Four-year-old gelding Highway Robber and 5-year-old millionaire
Tawny Port finished second and third in that order last month in the 1 1/2-mile
Kentucky Turf Cup (G2) at hilly Kentucky Downs. They come back to challenge 2023
Sycamore winner Bold Act. The 4-year-old Godolphin homebred who made his U.S.
debut with that victory last fall for trainer Charlie Appleby began his 2024 with
a win in the Dubai City of Gold (G2). Since returning to the U.S., he is 3:
0-0-2 including a third in the April running of the Elkhorn (G2) over the same
course and distance as the Sycamore.

Grayosh and She Feels Pretty, the top two finishers just a
neck apart Aug. 17 in the Lake Placid (G2) at Saratoga, will go an added 110
yards in this rematch. Grayosh and Lake George (G3) runner-up Oversubscribed
were entered by Chad Brown, who has trained a record four winners of this race,
all since 2018. With blinkers added by trainer Cherie DeVaux, She Feels Pretty makes
her second Grade 1 start. She finished a close third in the Belmont Oaks
Invitational in July at Aqueduct.
