Aqueduct hosts what traditionally has been Belmont Park’s
super Saturday. Keeneland observes the shedding of sycamore leaves with the start
of its October meet. Santa Anita rolls out an encore to its California Crown party.
What they have in common is the Breeders’ Cup challenge
series. In plain English, there will be 15 win-and-you’re-in qualifiers at the
three U.S. tracks and at Woodbine in Canada. Fourteen horses and their
connections will get invitations to two big days at Del Mar on Nov. 1 and 2.
Between Friday and Sunday, there are 30 graded stakes at
five tracks. They start in New York and in Kentucky, where it will be opening
day Friday at Keeneland.

Immersive, a Maclean’s Music filly, was a 12-1 surprise who
won the seven-furlong Spinaway (G1) in the Saratoga mud last month. Quietside, by
Malibu Moon, finished second as the 5-2 favorite. Sherbini, by Cairo Prince, was
a distant third at 10-1. In this rematch, they will be asked for the first time
to race around two turns. The same goes for Quickick, a $550,000 daughter of
McKinzie who closed from fifth to break her maiden last out going seven
furlongs at Saratoga.

Phoenix (G2), Keeneland, 6 furlongs, 3-year-olds and up,
Breeders’ Cup Sprint qualifier
Connections for millionaire Nakatomi still bask in the blush
of this summer’s victory in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap. It was the first
time in four tries the 5-year-old gelding won a Grade 1. Owned by Qatar Racing
and Fitri Hays, the son of Firing Line trained by Wesley Ward finished second
in last year’s Phoenix, losing by three-quarters of a length to Hoist the Gold.
Eight-year-old Manny Wah, who won the 2022 renewal of this race, is winless in 12

Jessamine (G2), Keeneland, 1 1/16 miles, turf, 2-year-old
fillies, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf qualifier
The sample size is not much, but Isle of Capri has lived up
to expectations so far in her young career. The Kentucky-bred Munnings filly
was sold as a weanling for $250,000 in Keeneland’s 2022 breeding-stock sale.
Owned by Ireland-based powerhouse Coolmore, she made her debut for trainer
Brendan Walsh this month at Kentucky Downs. As the 5-2 favorite, she led the
field of 12 at every call and won by four lengths in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden race
worth $180,800. Of the Jessamine’s probable starters listed by the Keeneland
racing office, Reining Flowers and She’s Got Will are the only ones who already
have raced over a route of ground.

Futurity (G3), Belmont at Aqueduct, 6 furlongs, turf, 2-year-olds,
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint qualifier
Mentee and Gate to Wire give trainer Todd Pletcher two
chances for a fifth Futurity win and his first since 2018. Mentee, a City of
Light colt and a full brother of Eclipse Award winner Fierceness, makes the
switch to turf after two starts on dirt. He set the Aqueduct track record June
15 with a victorious, 56.97-second debut covering five furlongs. That was good
for an 88 Beyer Speed Figure, according to Daily Racing Form. A fever
took him out of the Sanford (G3), and he returned Sept. 2 with a sixth-place
result in the Hopeful (G1). Gate to Wire, by Munnings, delivered a stalking, 1
3/4-length victory Aug. 30 in his debut at Saratoga.

Waya (G3), Belmont at Aqueduct, 1 3/8 miles, turf,
fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Has Charlie Appleby cooled off? When Beautiful Love won the 1
3/8-mile Jockey Club Oaks Invitational (G3) barely two weeks ago, it ended the
Godolphin trainer’s streak of eight consecutive graded-stakes losses in North
America. That came after a 6-for-11 run this summer. Whatever the case, Appleby
wheels Beautiful Love back for the Waya. It will be her third start in the U.S.,
the third country in which she has found the winner’s circle. Bred in Ireland
by Godolphin, the 3-year-old Siyouni filly broke her maiden last year at
Appleby’s Newmarket home base in England before she added an allowance win going
a mile at Meydan.

Champagne (G1), Belmont at Aqueduct, 1 mile, 2-year-olds,
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile qualifier, Kentucky Derby 10-5-3-2-1 points prep
Chancer McPatrick won’t have Ferocious to deal with this
weekend. Scroll four races down or 700 miles away in Kentucky to find the odds-on
favorite who was upset Labor Day weekend in the Hopeful (G1) at Saratoga. Their
rematch will have to wait. Trainer Chad Brown is staying home with the $725,000
son of McKinzie who comes back from his 4-1 upset to run in this one-turn mile.
The Champagne has produced 23 Kentucky Derby winners, more than any other race
for 2-year-olds. Then again, it has not produced any since Super Saver in
2009-10.

It could be said Senza Parole is the Ferocious of juvenile fillies.
Like her male peer, she has the best Beyer in her division. Her 94 came when
she won her debut Aug. 23 in a 7 3/4-length runaway going six furlongs at
Saratoga. Trained by Chad Brown, the daughter of Gun Runner is a Don Alberto
Stable homebred. Social Fortress brings a 2-for-2 record to the Frizette, most
recently winning the one-mile Sorority at Monmouth Park by seven lengths.

Among his 30 races and 11 wins, 7-year-old gelding Nothing
Better has won five times in stakes races. He has been asked to graduate to
graded company only once before, and that resulted in a fifth-place finish out
of 14 horses in the 2023 Jaipur (G1). Trainer Jorge Duarte will have him try
again Saturday, looking to go one better than he did in his two most recent
starts. Nothing Better is coming off runner-up results in the Select Stakes at
Monmouth Park and in the Da Hoss at Colonial Downs, each at 5 1/2 furlongs.

First Lady (G1), Keeneland, 1 mile, turf, fillies and

Brown has had a longer association with the term First Lady
than either Jill Biden or Melania Trump. He has won the race by that name each
of the last six years and seven times overall. Five-year-olds Whitebeam, Chili
Flag and 2023 winner Gina Romantica are his candidates to maintain his
domination. Whitebeam has been off since she won the Diana (G1) in July. Chili
Flag beat Whitebeam two starts back in the Just A Game (G1) for her third

has not won since last year’s First Lady. She was edged by a neck last out as
the 2-5 favorite in the four-horse Ballston Spa (G2).

American Pharoah (G1), Santa Anita, 1 1/16 miles, 2-year-olds,
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile qualifier, Kentucky Derby 10-5-3-2-1 points prep
The horses who hit the board in the Del Mar Futurity (G1)
may have a two-turn reunion of their seven-furlong opening act from three weeks
ago. Gaming, a $250,000 Game Winner colt, is listed as a maybe by the Santa Anita
racing office. If he goes, he would be trying to get to 3-for-3 for trainer Bob
Baffert. McKinzie Street, a $290,000 McKinzie colt, was a keen second in the
Del Mar Futurity and is likely to be entered by trainer Tim Yakteen. Citizen
Bull, a $675,000 Into Mischief colt who was the beaten 6-5 favorite Sept. 8, is

Oak Leaf (G2), Santa Anita, 1 1/16 miles, 2-year-old
fillies, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies qualifier, Kentucky Oaks 10-5-3-2-1
points prep
Lather, rinse, repeat. The prelude to this race is similar
to the American Pharoah. The top three from the Del Mar Debutante (G1) could be
back, again stretching from seven furlongs around one turn to 1 1/16 miles
around two. Tenma, an $850,000 Nyquist filly, won for Baffert and is probable
for this race. Vodka With a Twist was second for Phil D’Amato and is listed as
possible. So There She Was finished third for Doug O’Neill and is probable. This
race is reverting to the name it had from its inception in 1969 until it was rechristened
the Chandelier Stakes from 2012 to 2023.

Rodeo Drive (G2), Santa Anita, 6 1/2 furlongs, turf, fillies

Iscreamuscream brings her 4-for-4 record into this race coming
off her 1 1/2-length triumph Aug. 17 in the Del Mar Oaks (G1). On paper this is
a downgrade, although the lure of a Breeders’ Cup invitation attracted the
quality pair of John C. Mabee (G2) winner Hang the Moon and runner-up Lucky
Girl. On the track this is a cutback for Iscreamuscream. The $330,000 Twirling
Candy filly trained by D’Amato was a route-going winner in her last two starts.

Sweet Azteca at 6 1/2 furlongs. That combination has been
money in the bank every time. Pam Ziebarth’s homebred 4-year-old Sharp Azteca

most recent victories came by five lengths in the Great Lady M (G2) at Los

At least three entrants were confirmed by trainers Mark
Casse and Kevin Attard for this sprint. First Empire, a 5-year-old Classic
Empire gelding, comes back from a fourth-place finish last month in the Bold
Venture (G3). Bring Theband Home, a 4-year-old Into Mischief gelding, graduates
from allowance-level company, where he has won three of his last four. I’m a
Gambler, a 5-year-old No Nay Never gelding, was fifth barely two weeks ago in
the Vigil (G3) after losing by only a half-length in a third-place performance
in the Bold Venture. Patches O’Houlihan, who won the Bold Venture and the

Casse confirmed 6-year-old Fev Rover will line up. Attard,
however, said he was not sure whether rival Moira and their last-out conqueror
Full Count Felicia would be in this race that he and Casse have won once each. He
said 5-year-old Moira, the 2022 Canada horse of the year, was “50-50” to go
Saturday. She has a 4-3 edge over 2023 Canada champion Fev Rover in head-to-head
matchups. Both lost to 5-year-old Full Count Felicia, whose 1 1/4-mile E. P.
Taylor (G1) triumph last out for Attard followed her victory in the 1 1/8-mile Canadian

Last year’s winner Palazzi, a 6-year-old Pioneerof the Nile
gelding, returns for Casse. He won the Eclipse (G2) on the Woodbine Tapeta in
June and then came in third on the turf this month in the 1 1/4-mile Niagara.
That was his first race on grass since his off-the-board finishes early this
year in three Fair Grounds graded stakes. Casse said he also plans to enter
three-time Florida allowance victor Eye On the King and 6-year-old workhorse

B.C. Premiers (G3), Hastings, 1 3/8 miles, 3-year-olds and up
That would be British Columbia, not Breeders’ Cup. And the
$100,000 purse is in Canada dollars. It translates to about US$74,000. Phantom
Ride, a 4-year-old Candy Ride colt, is a likely entrant who won five times for Hall
of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. After bouncing through claim boxes twice this
spring, he landed with trainer Ian Jewell and comes off a third-place finish in
the S. W. Randall Plate Handicap on Sept. 7 at Hastings. Apprehend won that
race and, with back-to-back victories, is the hottest horse coming into this Vancouver race.

Spinster (G1), Keeneland, 1 1/8 miles, fillies and mares,
3-year-olds and up, Breeders’ Cup Distaff qualifier
This race was part of Idiomatic’s championship résumé last year. She led the whole way and won by 4 1/4 lengths, a perfect send-off before her valedictory triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. The 5-year-old season has been a tougher for the Curlin mare bred and owned by Juddmonte and trained by Brad Cox. Her wins in the La Troienne (G1) and Molly Pitcher (G3) were followed by close second-place finishes in the Ogden Phipps (G1) and last month’s Personal Ensign (G1). As a trivia aside, last year’s Spinster marked the last time Idiomatic was not favored. At even money, she was the second choice to 9-10 Nest, the 2022 champion juvenile filly who finished fourth in what turned out to be her final race.

Clock Tower, bought as a yearling for $100,000 by Dubai political
donor Fitri Hay, won his turf debut last month by 6 1/2 lengths at Kentucky Downs.
Trainer Wesley Ward had gotten the Not This Time gelding started in May with a
third-place finish going five furlongs on the main track at Churchill Downs.
Clock Tower came back in August to finish second going a mile in an
off-the-turf race at Saratoga. He was kept at a mile but moved to the grass,
where everything came together Aug. 29 in the $170,000 race.

Beldame (G2), Belmont at Aqueduct, 1 1/8 miles, fillies
and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Raging Sea was a giant killer in her last race, rallying to
defeat reigning division champion Idiomatic by a head in the Personal Ensign
(G1) at Saratoga. Based on the small number of probables listed so far for this
race, the speed meltdown that helped Raging Sea might not repeat itself this
weekend. Usually stalking or working from mid-pack, the 4-year-old Alpha Delta
Stables homebred trained by Chad Brown has won five of her last six races and
became a millionaire with her Personal Ensign triumph.
Miss Grillo (G2), Belmont at Aqueduct, 1 1/16 miles, turf, 2-year-old fillies, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf automatic qualifier
Now where were we? This race was postponed a week because of
waterlogged turf. Entries will be retaken Wednesday. That is when Brown, a
nine-time Miss Grillo winner, is expected to show up again with a group led by Virgin
Colada. After making a winning debut this July 21, the More Than Ready filly
owned by John Stewart’s Resolute Racing finished second as a 4-5 favorite Aug.
28, losing by only a half-length in the listed P.G. Johnson Stakes. Both those
Saratoga races covered 1 1/16 miles, the same distance as the Miss Grillo will
be when it finally is run.

Forgive the lead owner of Laurice if he does not have all
his focus on the Matron Stakes early this week. Alex Bregman will be busy
playing third base for the Houston Astros against the Detroit Tigers in the American

At 7, Salesman has a 1 5/8-mile Grade 2 win from last fall on

If 4-year-old Reincarnate is entered by Baffert, he would come in off a narrow,

4-year-old gelding, is coming off a 1 5/8-mile stakes victory at the Humboldt

Remember the Del Mar Juvenile Turf (G3) going two turns about

horses in that race, including the top four, have been listed as potential

Surfer Girl (G3), Santa Anita, 1 mile, turf, 2-year-old
fillies
Thought Process already might have exceeded the expectations
of his breeders from the Brereton Jones estate when they failed to get what
they wanted for her in two failed tries to sell her at auction. After losing her
sprint debut on dirt, the Collected filly is 2-for-2 going a mile, coming
through as the heavy favorite each time. Trained by D’Amato, she comes into
this race off a win in the Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 7 at Del Mar.
