Aqueduct hosts what traditionally has been Belmont Park’s
super Saturday. Keeneland observes the shedding of sycamore leaves with the start
of its October meet. Santa Anita rolls out an encore to its California Crown party.
What they have in common is the Breeders’ Cup challenge
series. In plain English, there will be 14 win-and-you’re-in qualifiers at the
three U.S. tracks and at Woodbine in Canada. Fourteen horses and their
connections will get invitations to two big days at Del Mar on Nov. 1 and 2.
Between Friday and Sunday, there are 29 graded stakes at
five tracks. They start in New York and in Kentucky, where it will be opening
day Friday at Keeneland.

Immersive, a Maclean’s Music filly, was a 12-1 surprise who
won the seven-furlong Spinaway (G1) in the Saratoga mud last month. Quietside, by
Malibu Moon, finished second as the 5-2 favorite. Sherbini, by Cairo Prince, was
a distant third at 10-1. In this rematch, they will be asked for the first time
to race around two turns. The same goes for Quickick, a $550,000 daughter of
McKinzie who closed from fifth to break her maiden last out going seven
furlongs at Saratoga.

Phoenix (G2), Keeneland, 6 furlongs, 3-year-olds and up,
Breeders’ Cup Sprint qualifier
Connections for millionaire Nakatomi still bask in the blush
of this summer’s victory in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap. It was the first
time in four tries the 5-year-old gelding won a Grade 1. Owned by Qatar Racing
and Fitri Hays, the son of Firing Line trained by Wesley Ward finished second
in last year’s Phoenix, losing by three-quarters of a length to Hoist the Gold.
Eight-year-old Manny Wah, who won the 2022 renewal of this race, is winless in 12
starts since.

Jessamine (G2), Keeneland, 1 1/16 miles, turf, 2-year-old
fillies, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf qualifier
The sample size is not much, but Isle of Capri has lived up
to expectations so far in her young career. The Kentucky-bred Munnings filly
was sold as a weanling for $250,000 in Keeneland’s 2022 breeding-stock sale.
Owned by Ireland-based powerhouse Coolmore, she made her debut for trainer
Brendan Walsh this month at Kentucky Downs. As the 5-2 favorite, she led the
field of 12 at every call and won by four lengths in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden race
worth $180,800. Of the Jessamine’s probable starters listed by the Keeneland
racing office, Reining Flowers and She’s Got Will are the only ones who already
have raced over a route of ground.

Futurity (G3), Belmont at Aqueduct, 6 furlongs, turf, 2-year-olds,
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint qualifier
Under Who’s Radar finished in each of his first two races,
but he was demoted to second Sept. 1 in the 6 1/2-furlong, $872,500 Kentucky
Downs Juvenile Sprint. Stewards decided his outward move under José Ortiz’s
left-handed crop interfered with Chasing Liberty. Owned by a Paradise Farms-led
partnership and trained by Mike Maker, the Violence colt won his 5 1/2-furlong
debut in July going 5 1/2 furlongs on the main track at Saratoga.

Waya (G3), Belmont at Aqueduct, 1 3/8 miles, turf,
fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Has Charlie Appleby cooled off? When Beautiful Love won the 1
3/8-mile Jockey Club Oaks Invitational (G3) barely two weeks ago, it ended the
Godolphin trainer’s streak of eight consecutive graded-stakes losses in North
America. That came after a 6-for-11 run this summer. Whatever the case, Appleby
wheels Beautiful Love back for the Waya. It will be her third start in the U.S.,
the third country in which she has found the winner’s circle. Bred in Ireland
by Godolphin, the 3-year-old Siyouni filly broke her maiden last year at
Appleby’s Newmarket home base in England before she added an allowance win going
a mile at Meydan.

Ferocious put an exclamation point next to his name when he
made his debut with a 7 3/4-length runaway in 6 1/2 furlongs of Saratoga. The
performance earned a 96 Beyer Speed Figure from Daily Racing Form. The
Flatter colt came up a half-length short as the 3-5 favorite in the seven-furlong
Hopeful (G1), losing to Chancer McPatrick but still earning an 87 Beyer in
defeat. Ferocious shares racing connections, including trainer Gustavo Delgado,
with retired 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage.

Turf Mile (G1), Keeneland, 1 mile, turf, 3-year-olds and

On the verge of passing $1 million in earnings, Carl
Spackler looks for his third consecutive win to go along with Saratoga scores in
July in the Kelso (G3) and last month in the Fourstardave Handicap (G1). The
4-year-old Lope de Vega colt owned by Bob Edwards and trained by Chad Brown will
see familiar foes in this $1.25 million race. Grade 3 winner More Than Looks finished
second in the Fourstardave. Talk of the Nation, who is 6: 0-3-2 in graded
stakes, lost by only a half-length in the Kelso.
