CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WICS) — The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in the Market Place Shopping Center, 2000 N. Neil St., on Tuesday morning.
Firefighters responded to the report from an employee of smoke coming from the ceiling tiles in an individual store.
Once on the scene, firefighters upgraded the fire to a working incident as they located the small fire contained to the ventilation equipment.
A second alarm was called as crews were working to evacuate the shopping center and isolate the ventilation system to the single occupancy.
The cause of this fire is accidental and has been attributed to a heating element in the ventilation system. There was one firefighter treated on scene for a minor injury. There were no occupant injuries reported. Only one store suffered minor damage.
