A new type of fitness class is coming to the Four Corners as Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt Cecilia Hatchcock returns home to start teaching others.
FARMINGTON, N.M. — There’s a new type of fitness coming to the Four Corners.
Come the first week of February, classes at the Zia Fitness and Jiu Jitsu will be open seven days a week for and kids ages 7-to-11 and adults.
“We’re just waiting for the fire inspection and a few other finishing details,” said Cecilia Hatchcock, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and a judo green belt.
Hatchcock will be running the operation, which will host classes for yoga, kickboxing and jiu-jitsu.
She said her love for mixed martial arts started early, so she took her skills to the matt.
“I was born and raised here in Farmington, and I have two brothers that wrestled, and so that was initially my passion (that) started when I was younger,” Hatchcock said. “I initially started training in 2009 but I didn’t start competing or training more serious until about 2010.”
After making quite a name for herself, Hatchcock began teaching others.
“I moved to Durango from Colorado Springs, (where) I started coaching in 2017,” she said. “And so I started helping assist with kids’ classes, and then eventually I started to help teach the adult all levels class as well as kickboxing classes.”
Now she’s bringing her skills back home, where it all started.
“I wanted to bring that here to Farmington, where a lot of my family and friends are, too,” Hatchcock said. “It’s impacted my life tremendously, and I would like to share that with this community, because I feel like it’s helped me so much in every aspect of my life.”
