Torrey Pines’ South Course – which hosts three of the four rounds this week – is one of the longest setups on Tour, measuring 7,765 yards. It’s a championship venue that features smaller poa annua greens (ave. 5,000 sq. ft) and water in play on just one hole. ShotLink data is only available on the South Course, which Director of Agronomy Devin Cullen has noted as being the driest winter he has experienced in his nine years with the last significant rain event in early April. Great weather has produced a significant increase in number of rounds on the public course, which has resulted in increase in wear and tear on the property.
Approach play including focus from 125-150 yards is a key strokes gained stat this week. Also Around the Green play and Driving distance gained as long hitters rise towards the top along with stronger long iron players. The South Course features eight Par 4 holes that measure more than 450 yards.
For many golf fans and bettors, the Farmers remains the true start of the PGA season. The tournament tees off four weeks of high-profile events with a pair of Signature Events at Pebble Beach and Genesis Invitational sandwiched between the popular Phoenix Open over Super Bowl weekend.
