With the first week of the 2024 NFL season in the rearview mirror, it’s time to scour the fantasy football waiver wire for pickups in Week 2.
Whether you’re replacing a high draft pick who sustained an unfortunate injury – like the Rams ’ Puka Nacua) – or eyeing under-the-radar players who popped out of nowhere, fantasy football experts Sean Koerner and Chris Raybon have you covered.
The duo hopped on the Fantasy Flex pod on Tuesday and discussed all things Week 2 waiver wire adds, which you can watch here:
You can find Koerner’s Week 2 waiver notes below, and as always, make sure to check their weekly fantasy football rankings to see how other waiver wire candidates project.
Week 2 Waiver Wire Notes
The notes below are from Sean Koerner.
QB Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers (65% availability)
Mayfield finished as the QB2 overall in Week 1 while on his way to throwing 4 touchdowns
We shouldn’t overreact too much given it was against the Commanders defense
But Bake, Evans, Godwin looked sharp and on the same page, nonetheless
It’s worth noting that Mayfield did play 1-2 drives in the preseason, some of these other teams that were rusty didn’t play starters at all
This week is potentially another good spot for Baker at Detroit ,where the Lions have more of a pass funnel defense (especially if DJ Reader makes his debut on the Lions’ defensive line)
Tampa’s secondary is dealing with a ton of injuries, and will probably allow a ton of points which should provide a great game script for Mayfield
Overall, Mayfield is my QB13 to open the week
RB Bucky Irving, Buccaneers (79% availability)
Here’s a backup RB I was high on entering the season because I felt there was a non-zero chance he could force a 50/50 backfield with Rachaad White or even leapfrog him
He was the more efficient back in Week 1 and Bowles has hinted that he will go with hot hand approach
Bucky isn’t a Week 2 play, he’s still the backup, and this is a brutal matchup against the Lions run defense
It’s actually a sneaky good matchup for him long term because White will likely be the lead back again and could struggle against tough Run D, only make it more likely for Bucky to see a spike in usage in Week 3+
RB Jaleel McLaughlin, Broncos (63% availability)
Similar situation where he’s probably not in play for Week 2 for most people, but long term, he’s moved up in my backup upside ratings
Denver backfield already looks more like a 50/50 backfield at worst
5 rec for 1 yard, nearly broke loose on a few of them
Seems like a RB3/Flex when Javonte is healthy and RB2 upside if he misses time
Great RB bench stash to have
Can get them pretty cheap FAAB/waivers
WR Demarcus Robinson, Rams (93% availability)
With Puka Nacua expected to miss a handful of games, Robinson and Tyler Johnson are must-adds in leagues that start three WRs
Both will likely run a route on close to 90% of Stafford dropbacks going forward
Jordan Whittington could mix in, he was operating as Tyler Johnson’s backup
Robinson played well in this system towards the end of last season and through the playoffs so I think he’s a bit safer of a waiver add
* Johnson clearly gets the biggest boost from the news going from 10-20% routes run to 90%
TE Colby Parkinson, Rams (94% availability)
Obviously Robinson/Johnson get a huge boost with Puka Nacua out
But Parkinson does too and he’s probably going to be more useful to starting lineups than either WR just because of the dumpster fire that the TE position is right now
He had a 82% routes run rate, not surprising as he is expected to fill in for Higbee until he returns
In the meantime, he should see enough of a spike in target rate without Nacua to put him in the TE1 range
Opens the Week as my TE14 and is a must add for David Njoku/Jake Ferguson teams
K Matt Prater (94% availability ) vs. Los Angeles Rams
The Lions are playing at home, indoors
Arizona Cardinals have around the 6th-highest implied team total of Week 2
Prater has a big leg, hitting at least five 50+ yarders in each of the last 5 seasons. He has 75% career FG% on kicks 50+ yards
Opens the week as my K5 which is highest among widely available kickers
DEF Seattle Seahawks (57% availability) at New England patriots
Any defense playing the Patriots is going to shoot up my weekly ranking and will be a perfect pick-up if you are streaming defenses
Additionally, the Seahawks defense looked solid in Week 1
I figured new HC Mike Macdonald would turn things around, but it already looks to be the case as they rank 1st in DVOA after Week 1
