Fan favorite Boban Marjanović is leaving the NBA to play in Turkey for the Euroleague’s Fenerbahce, Euroshoops and ESPN report.
Terms of Marjanović’s contract with the Turkish team were not reported.
Marjanović, 36, previously played nine NBA seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets. He spent the last two seasons in Houston.
A 7-4 center, Marjanović played in a limited capacity in each of his NBA stops. He made 25 starts in his 331 games played, averaging 5.5 points and 3.6 rebounds in 8.7 minutes per game. He played 5.1 minutes per game in just 14 appearances with the Rockets last season. The Houston Chronicle reports that Marjanović was not in the team’s plans for next season.
Marjanović endeared himself to fans across the league with his sense of humor and outgoing personality that matches his size on the court. In last season’s regular-season finale against his former Clippers, Marjanović intentionally missed the second of two free throws late in the game to trigger a promotion for free chicken sandwiches, much to the delight of the crowd and the broadcast announcers.
He made a cameo as a villain in the “John Wick” action movie franchise, where he got into fight with the Keanu Reeves-portrayed title character.
A native of Serbia, Marjanović played multiple seasons in European leagues before joining the Spurs in 2015. He was a three-time Serbian Super League MVP from 2013-15.
