Although it was in a losing effort, Malachi Flynn arguably had the standout performance of any Detroit Pistons player last season. While his impressive showing wasn’t enough to secure his spot in Detroit, the 26-year-old guard has found a new opportunity with the San Antonio Spurs, signing a one-year deal with them.
Shams Charania of The Athletic first reported the news.
Flynn will join a Spurs backcourt that includes future Hall of Famer and 12-time NBA All-Star Chris Paul, as well as fifth-year guard Tre Jones.
The Pistons acquired Flynn in a multi-player trade with the New York Knicks at the NBA trade deadline. In addition to Flynn, the Pistons received Ryan Arcidiacono, Evan Fournier, Quentin Grimes, and two second-round picks from the Knicks in exchange for Bojan Bogdanović and Alec Burks.
During his 24-game stint in Detroit, Flynn averaged eight points per game. In a 121-113 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Apr. 3, Flynn scored a career-high 50 points off the bench, shooting an impressive 72% from the field and making five three-pointers. He also recorded six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Flynn’s performance made him the ninth player in Pistons history to score 50 points in a game, with the last player achieving this feat being Pistons 2020 draft pick Saddiq Bey, who scored 51 points in a victory over the Orlando Magic. Additionally, Flynn tied former NBA guard Nick Anderson for the most points scored off the bench in NBA history. His previous career high was 27 points.
A native of Tacoma, Flynn was selected 29th overall by the Toronto Raptors in the 2020 NBA Draft. He spent his first three and a half seasons with the Raptors before moving to the Knicks and then the Pistons. Over his career, Flynn has averaged 5.5 points per game.
