The Colorado football brand can be intimidating. The face and leader of the program, Deion Sanders, exuberates flash and brashness but is also an NFL Hall of Famer and has succeeded in nearly every aspect of his life. He took over a one-win program and transformed it into a group that was in a position to compete for a conference title in year two.
Even with a headset, he’s still Prime Time.
He does things on his terms, but it’s netted impressive results. That includes the development of his son, Shedeur, who will likely be a top-five pick in April. Most prospects don’t have experienced and well-connected fathers feeding them advice, and that can be troublesome for quarterback-needy teams with shaky infrastructure.
While on First Things First, NFL receiving great Greg Jennings suggested the Giants, a team desperately needing a new signal caller, shouldn’t be turned off by this unique dynamic when evaluating Shedeur.
“I’m shocked that this is something because it should be nothing,” Jennings said. “You’re in New York, dealing with the kid that’s had limelight and exposure his entire collegiate career because of his dad, and he’s handled it like a pro. I don’t care who his dad is. You’re focused on the player because you feel like he is good enough to change the landscape of how you’re going to move forward.”
Shedeur is his own person. He’s the “Grown QB.” He won’t be a first-round pick because of his last name but rather because of his production on the field.
It shouldn’t matter who he’s related to if he’s ready to come to work and be the future of the franchise.
Even if the 23-year-old doesn’t have the Big Apple as his preferred destination, it’s hard to imagine he spurns such a prominent organization. Deion shouldn’t be a part of the equation—if New York wants Shedeur, they need to take him.
