Mike Tannenbaum might have just cooked up the most outrageous Detroit Lions trade proposal you’ll ever see from an NFL expert, involving Cleveland Browns All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett.
Tannenbaum, who led front offices for the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins in the 2000s across a nearly three-decade career, was on ESPN’s “Get Up” morning show Friday, and his idea prompted fellow analyst and former NFL cornerback Ryan Clark to briefly walk off the set.
Why? Well, here was Tannenbaum’s trade:
“And the Detroit Lions are gonna win the Super Bowl!” Tannenbaum exclaimed.
“They’re gonna throw in the Joe Louis fist,” analyst Dan Graziano interjected, “the GM building, like what else, that big bridge to Canada.”
“They need a pass rusher in the worst way,” Tannenbaum said. “Aidan Hutchinson may come back, this guy (Garrett) is still young, in the prime of his career and if I’m Detroit, I can win the Super Bowl. Jahmyr Gibbs is a good player but he’s replaceable.”
Garrett, the No. 1 overall pick by the Browns in the 2017 draft, is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, and has six consecutive seasons of at least 10 sacks. He has four in eight games this season, and turns 29 in December.
“Three (firsts),” analyst and former NFL linebacker Bart Scott asked incredulously?
“It’s really four when you think about it because Gibbs was a first-rounder last year,” Graziano added.
“Brad Holmes, who came from the Rams — ‘F them picks’ — these are gonna be low picks and you’re not gonna have the ability to get somebody,” Tannenbaum said.
“What is this, the Herschel Walker trade?” Scott asked.
“Why wouldn’t they win the Super Bowl with Myles Garrett with the way this offense is going?” Tannenbaum said.
“You could win it without them,” Graziano said.
“You got the right team, wrong player,” Scott said. “Go get Za’Darius Smith and keep your picks. Jahmyr Gibbs is their home run hitter. This is a team that’s based off running the football. Za’Darius Smith will be just fine, you get him for a box of Kool-Aid.”
“Myles Garrett may be the best player in the NFL not a quarterback,” Tannenbaum responded.
Clark finally walked back to the set to share his opinion.
“This team is good enough without making that type of change,” Clark said, before agreeing the Lions need a proven pass rusher.
“Giving up Jahmyr Gibbs is giving up part of your offensive identity. And the offensive identity of this team, to me, is the driving force to them winning the Super Bowl.”
Tannenbaum finished the conversation looking at it from a front office view, with the trade deadline looming Tuesday at 4 p.m.
“Guys, don’t get me wrong, I think Jahmyr Gibbs is a great player, I’m just saying from a team-building standpoint, to get somebody like Myles Garrett is almost impossible.”
Indeed. Still, that is a gargantuan price to pay when other options are out there.
Earth to the Lions: Nobody should give Holmes’ phone number to Tannenbaum.
