Midway through the college football season, coaches’ seats are heating up. Where do Oklahoma’s Brent Venables and USC’s Lincoln Riley stand?
The College Football Playoff Committee is on the brink of releasing the season’s first of six top-25 rankings, a highly anticipated event that will reveal where teams stand as they vie for a spot in the new 12-team College Football Playoff format.
The College Football Playoff Committee, a panel of esteemed individuals including athletic directors from the Power Four conferences, former coaches, players, and retired media members, is responsible for ranking the top 25 teams. The culmination of their work will be the final rankings, a pivotal moment that will be unveiled on Selection Day, Sunday, December 8, when the 12 teams that will compete in the playoffs, bracket and game sites will be revealed.
According to the College Football Playoff website, the selection committee evaluates and ranks teams based on their performance, strength of schedule, and game results.

To be selected for the College Football Committee, a member must have experience in college football, typically as a current or former athletic director, coach, player or prominent member of the media.
In the 2024-25 season, 12 teams will qualify for the College Football Playoff, a significant change from the four teams selected for the playoff field over the past decade.
The new 12-team College Football Playoff will feature four conference champions, who will automatically secure the top four bids. The highest-ranked four teams will receive a first-round bye and will advance directly to the quarterfinals. The remaining eight ranked teams will compete for spots in the 5-12 bracket and will play their games on the home field of the higher-ranked team.
