CLEVELAND, Ohio — In an age where analytics, advanced metrics and other data are shaping how football is played every day, the Browns rank No. 1 in the entire National Football League.
At least that’s the result of the annual poll of NFL analytics departments conducted by ESPN’s Seth Walder and released today.
The survey of questions regarding advanced metrics were sent to one analytics staffer from all 32 NFL teams. Walder received answers from 22 of the 32 teams. The Browns ranked No. 1, and received the most votes for a few of the questions.
The last question asked all the voters to list their top five most analytically advanced organizations. The 21 voters submitted their own list of five teams, totaling 105 votes across the board.
The Browns received 20 votes, giving them first place. Second was Baltimore with 19 votes.
“I just think they’re so far ahead in terms of who they have on staff,” a member of another AFC team’s analytics department said of the Browns. “Their data collection is advanced. The infrastructure that they’ve built over the past, like, decade still puts them ahead of the rest of the league.”
Below are some of the other categories in the survey and where the Browns ranked:
Ten of the 21 respondents for this question voted for the Browns, giving them first place. Second was Baltimore with three votes.
