The “joke” surrounding Auburn basketball lately is the age of its roster, which includes 10 seniors such as 25-year-old Chad Baker-Mazara and 24-year-old Denver Jones.
Despite being the end of a few punchlines, Auburn’s experience has placed them in a great position to hoist the trophy at the end of the upcoming NCAA Tournament says ESPN’s Myron Medcalf.
Medcalf recently included Auburn in his eight teams ‘we believe could win the national title’ alongside Jeff Borzello. Medcalf cited Auburn’s lack of success at the free throw line in its NCAA Tournament loss to Yale last season as a primary reason for not making it out of the first weekend despite having one of the country’s most talented rosters. However, the additions of Georgia Tech transfer Miles Kelly and four-star guard Tahaad Pettiford could, plus the momentum it has built in the recent weeks leading up to the NCAA Tournament, could push Auburn to its first national title.
Can the Tigers win it all? They have been the best team in college basketball for the bulk of the season, and Bruce Pearl is a strong contender to win national Coach of the Year. Although the one-and-done trend is a popular conversation in this sport, the truth is veteran teams have won most of the national titles over the past 20 years, and Auburn has the experience to do it.
Although fans of other programs would suggest otherwise, Auburn’s roster is not the most experienced in the NCAA. According to KenPom, Auburn ranks No. 25 in “experience” behind programs such as Kansas, Ole Miss, and Kentucky. Still, the experience of Auburn’s roster has carried them to many wins this season, and Tiger fans can expect to watch their team make a deep run this March.
