A male spectator who exhibited “fixated behavior” toward Emma Raducanu during her match against Karolina Muchová in Dubai has been given a restraining order, Dubai authorities confirmed Thursday.

In a statement released on social media, they confirmed that Raducanu had dropped charges against the man, who had “approached her, left her a note, took her photograph, and engaged in behaviour that caused her distress.”

“While Raducanu later chose to drop the charges, the individual signed a formal undertaking to maintain distance from her and has been banned from future tournaments,” the statement read.

Raducanu was visibly upset during the match at the WTA 1,000 Dubai Tennis Championships on Tuesday, before court security ejected the spectator. She approached the umpire in tears during the second game in the match, retreating behind the official’s chair. The umpire spoke on a walkie-talkie before a brief pause in play, during which Muchová approached Raducanu.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), which governs women’s professional tennis, subsequently issued a statement saying that the same spectator had approached Raducanu earlier in the tournament.

“On Monday, February 17, Emma Raducanu was approached in a public area by a man who exhibited fixated behaviour,” the statement read.

“This same individual was identified in the first few rows during Emma’s match on Tuesday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and subsequently ejected. He will be banned from all WTA events pending a threat assessment.

“Player safety is our top priority, and tournaments are advised on security best practices for international sporting events. The WTA is actively working with Emma and her team to ensure her well-being and provide any necessary support.

“We remain committed to collaborating with tournaments and their security teams worldwide to maintain a safe environment for all players.”

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), Britain’s tennis governing body, added: “This incident once again highlights issues around safety that all players, but female players in particular, can face.

“We have support available for British players and have been in contact with Emma and her team following the events in Dubai. We have extensive security arrangements at our events in Britain and keep these under constant review.

“The tours have strong processes in place already, and we will continue to work together along with police and security providers to deal with situations like this robustly.”

In February 2022, a man was given a five-year restraining order after turning up at Raducanu’s family home on three occasions.

Despite falling behind 4-0 after the incident during her match against Muchová, Raducanu recovered to send the first set to a tiebreak, ultimately losing the match 7-6(6), 6-4.

The day after the match, Raducanu thanked fans for their support during what she called a “difficult experience.”

“I’ll be okay and proud of how I came back and competed despite what happened at the start of the match,” she said.
