A six-time Grand Slam champion and former world No 1 has indicated that she would be open to becoming Emma Raducanu’s coach.

The Brit split with coach Nick Cavaday after her third round exit at the Australian Open — the first of four consecutive losses.

Raducanu’s latest defeat came against Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the opening round at the Qatar Open.

The poor results indicate that something will need to change for Raducanu, and perhaps in a big way.

Rennae Stubbs, a former major winner in doubles, took to her self-titled podcast to discuss Raducanu and left the door open to forming a partnership with the 22-year-old.

“I would consider it (coaching Raducanu), of course,” she stated.

“I would never say no to an opportunity of working with a Grand Slam champion. What would I work on? The first thing I would do is sit her down and ask her what she wants.

“I think that’s the key. You have to know what your player wants. I think they all come in and think I am going to tweak this or that. I would sit her down and say, ‘let’s be honest here, what do you want? How do you want to approach this?’ And then we go from there.

“It’s a bit of a sit down, come to Jesus moment and be honest with her about where I feel like her top level is and how she can get there and not be like, ‘we can win another Slam tomorrow’. Because it’s unlikely at this point. So what are her goals realistically and what can we do to get there?”

Speaking on Cavaday’s decision to leave her team, Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, said: “It’s difficult. Nick is a great person. He’s someone I’ve known since I was a young girl, and he coached me before, so I think we were working really well together.

“Unfortunately, he had to prioritise his health, which I completely understand, and I support him, and I just wish him the speediest of recoveries.”

In the meantime, Raducanu will travel with junior coach Roman Kelecic, and she is in no rush to appoint a new coach to the team.

“I think that’s why I haven’t necessarily jumped into something straight away, because I want to make sure it’s a right fit,” added the current world No 60.

“And I think this period where I don’t necessarily have someone is going to tell me a lot. It’s going to teach me a lot, what I want, what I don’t want to look for in the next person.

“So, I think I’m using this time period to just figure out what I really value. I’m not too sure yet right now. I haven’t come to any plans or decisions. So yeah, I’m just taking it, using the next couple weeks to see how I feel, and then make a decision.”

Stubbs has already had a few successful coaching periods of her own, including with Sam Stosur, Karolina Pliskova, Eugenie Bouchard, and, briefly, Serena Williams.

In terms of her career as a player, she won the Australian Open, Wimbledon – twice – and the US Open, in women’s doubles.

Additionally, the Australian won the Australian Open and the US Open in the mixed doubles category. These victories helped her reach world No 1 status.
