Emma Raducanu opened up on her time away from tennis due to injury and how she was impacted by it.
Since her shock 2021 US Open title win, the Brit has suffered multiple fitness issues which have hampered her ability to perform consistently.
The Bromley local’s resilience has been tested to the next level given the number of times she has been forced to stop playing over the last three years.
Despite her fitness woes in 2024, Raducanu has still managed to climb back to number 55 in the WTA Tour rankings and will be preparing for a healthy 2025 campaign.
Emma Raducanu ended her 2023 season early after undergoing surgery on her ankle and both wrists which kept her on the sidelines for eight months before returning in January 2024.
The Bromley local has had injuries before but this was certainly the most difficult one for her to overcome, and she struggled to watch any tennis during that period.
What made matters worse was when she suffered a setback that kept her out for longer than originally suggested. However she took positives from the situation, which was learning patience and perseverance.
“I was out for eight months and I had three surgeries and the rehab wasn’t as straightforward as everyone planned,” Raducanu told HSBC.
“Initially the return to play was only meant to be four months and it ended up being double because I came back a bit too quickly and then did more damage. So I think I also learned a lesson in patience and trying to rush things.
“In terms of coming back it takes a while to get up to the speed of the game. The match is different from practice as well and introduces unpredictability, so I think now I’m just more grateful for my health than results.
“When you’re on the sidelines watching everything go past you and yeah it was difficult, I just had to shut it off and I actually couldn’t watch anything.”
Raducanu was due to play in the Hong Kong Open and even appeared in a video on their X account confirming her participation.
But less than a week later, the 22-year-old took to her own X account to announce she will no longer compete due to a foot injury.
This is the same issue that forced Raducanu to retire from the Korea Open and it means she will miss her fourth successive tournament after withdrawing from Beijing, Wuhan and the Ningbo Open. However, Raducanu is aiming to be fit for November’s Billie King Cup finals.
“Hello, I’m sorry to say that I will not be able to play in Hong Kong next week. Whilst my foot is making good progress, I need a little more time before I am match fit,” she wrote.
“I hope to be able to come back and play this tournament in the future! In the meantime, I am doing what I can to be ready for BJKC.”
