Emma Raducanu has taken some heat online for brushing off Andy Murray’s retirement from tennis as ‘old news’.
The 21-year-old is back at the US Open this week for the first time since 2022 with hopes of making a deep run in the final major of the year.
It’s the first Grand Slam since Murray retired from the sport after his emotional farewell at Wimbledon and the Olympics.
Murray and Raducanu were set to play together at Wimbledon before the young Brit pulled out of their scheduled match, denying the 37-year-old at least one more match at his home slam.
The three-time Grand Slam champion was a huge presence on the tennis circuit and one of the most respected players around.
“There’s always another tournament. Of course Andy’s achieved amazing things and I watched him win this tournament but it’s fast-paced like life is.
“It’s old news the next day.”
Raducanu’s comments caused a stir online with fans unhappy with the way she seemingly brushed over Murray’s retirement.
One angry comment read: “Absolutely disgusting. Showed her true colours right on camera this time!!! Ughh what a horror.”
Another posted: “The arrogance is just astonishing.”
A third said: “This is just one of those things that, while true, just didn’t need to be said. Especially by someone who, many would argue, is overrated based on nostalgia herself.”
