A pair of El Paso high school volleyball players have been named to the Texas Sportswriters Association All-State team in Class 6A.
Franklin outside hitter Victoria Bailey was named to the honorable mention team. She finished the 2024 season with 563 kills, 302 digs and 36 aces.
Eastwood middle blocker Montserrat Soto-Talavera named to the second team after a strong 2024 season in which she had 290 kills, 104 blocks and 54 digs.
Burges High School graduate and NBA player Tristen Newton was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Timberwolves following his release from the Indiana Pacers.
The former UConn basketball star was waived by the Pacers after logging five appearances with the team. Newton has spent most of the season in the G League, averaging 16.4 points, 6.7 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals on 39.5% shooting from 3-point range in 14 games with the Indiana Mad Ants.
Newton was the 49th pick in the NBA draft out of Connecticut last June. He was a first-team All-American last season and helped lead the Huskies to back-to-back national championships, earning Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors.
Newton’s cousin is Aaron Jones, the starting running back for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.
Corrina Corrina stamped herself as the all-time leading money earner among New Mexico-bred thoroughbreds with a victory in the 24th running of the $90,000 New Mexico State Racing Commission Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino on opening weekend of horse racing.
Owned by Derrick Jenkins and trained by Gary Cross, Corrina Corrina rallied from a tardy getaway under jockey Tracy Hebert and successfully defended her title in the New Mexico State Racing Commission Stakes, having won this race last year. In 10 starts at Sunland Park, she has six wins and four second-place finishes. Friday’s victory gives her 17 wins from 33 career starts with earnings of more than $1.16 million.
