NBA legend Dwyane Wade isn’t shutting the door on becoming a coach someday. However, he cautioned that the gig may not be his thing either.
Wade made his remarks while sitting down as the latest guest on the Unapologetically Angel podcast with Chicago Sky star Angel Reese. During the fan question segment (Reese’s Pieces), one person asked Wade if he ever sees himself as the coach of a team (53:40 mark).
“I really don’t want that life, but I would not say no,” Wade said.
Reese then asked Wade if he would coach his kids, and he responded as follows.
“If I needed to…I really feel like if my daughter plays basketball, I think I may be a coach. I definitely think I’m going to be that guy.”
“I don’t really know if coaching my thing. I love giving back to the game. I don’t know if I would be a coach, but you never want to say never because that may be a part of your calling, and to think about the chance to put together certain staff of individuals that can really imprint the players the way that you know they need to be imprinted and not just teaching them the game of basketball but the other things that come with being professionals and being men.
“So you look at those things like, ‘man, I got a lot to give and I can give it from that seat,’ but also I can give it from the seat I’m in too. And so I don’t know. I have no idea. But I would not say no. I’m not out of it. But I’m good right now.”
Wade certainly has an incredible resume that can help him become a tremendous coach. He’s a 16-year veteran who won three NBA titles, made 13 All-Star Games and earned spots on eight All-NBA teams (including two on the First Team).
The first-ballot Naismith Hall of Famer is also a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team and earned gold at the 2008 Summer Olympics with Team USA.
The 41-year-old Wade seems more unlikely to be a coach given his comments, although he’s keeping plenty busy following his NBA career. Wade is notably part of the Utah Jazz and Chicago Sky ownership groups, and he’s involved in a host of business ventures. Wade, who is married to actress Gabrielle Union, is also the father of five children.
He’s written numerous books and has been (and continues to be) deeply involved in the community over the decades as well, notably winning the NBA’s 2012-2013 Community Assist Award
Wade has also done broadcasting work, most recently as an analyst for men’s basketball at the Summer Olympics.
So he has a lot on his plate, and coaching may never find its way there. But it’s a door that Wade isn’t completely shutting at this time.
