We’re now at a point in the season where NBA scouts are starting to attend games in person to evaluate prospects for the upcoming NBA Draft. Currently, the Washington Wizards have the worst record in the league and are the favorites to land the first overall pick.
Other teams in the mix for the No. 1 pick include the Utah Jazz, Toronto Raptors, and New Orleans Pelicans. Regardless of which team secures the top spot, they’ll be set up for a bright future, as this year’s draft class is considered one of the strongest in recent years.
The projected No. 1 pick in June’s draft is widely expected to be the next generational talent the NBA has been waiting for. That player is none other than Duke freshman Cooper Flagg, who has been the most hyped prospect since his high school days at Montverde Academy.
During the NBA’s Paris Games over the weekend, a reporter asked commissioner Adam Silver whether Flagg could become the next American face of the league. Silver’s response was notably cautious, yet telling.
“The last thing I want to do is put pressure on Cooper Flagg, but he looks pretty spectacular so far,” Silver said.
While Silver didn’t want to crown Flagg just yet, it’s clear he’s been paying attention to his impressive play.
Flagg, a 6-foot-9 freshman from Maine, has been dominating college basketball over the past month. His breakout moment came with a poster dunk over a Pittsburgh defender on a fast break, followed by his career-best game shortly after.
If Flagg is selected as the No. 1 pick, he will make history as the youngest player ever to be chosen first overall in the NBA Draft.
Not only is Flagg playing at an ACC Player of the Year level, but he is also one of the favorites to win National Player of the Year honors.
