LEXINGTON, KY.—Rain hampered the first day of the Central College men’s golf season at the Transylvania (Ky.) Fall Invitational Saturday.
           
The Dutch and the rest of the 19-team field were scheduled to play 36 holes at the par-72 University Club of Kentucky. Six inches of rain on Friday night caused a nearly three-hour delay to the start of the day. The golfers had another 90-minute pause due to severe weather after just eight holes. The Dutch got through seven additional holes before a deluge took the competitors off the course for the day.
           
Coach Mel Blasi said the scores matched the play of his young team. Central is 33 strokes over par and in 18th place. The hosts from Transylvania pace the field with a score of eight under par.
           
“We had a disastrous start, especially our first six holes,” he said. “We started to find our groove later in the round.”
           
The Dutch lineup features three freshmen, including Maison Brandt (Byron, Ill.) who is even par through 15 holes to pace the Dutch lineup. Senior Kayden Pendergrass (Mount Vernon) is sitting at four over par.
           
The tournament has been shortened to just 36 holes as the teams will complete the remainder of their first round tomorrow before playing a fresh 18 holes.
           
“We start on a really good part of the course tomorrow,” Blasi said. “We will look to right the ship.”
