Holger Rune on Wednesday night was forced tot withdraw from the Mexican Open in Acapulco due to food poisoning
Rune, who was seeded 4th in the tournament, had booked his ticket for the second round of the tournament after winning 7-6, 6-3 in the first round against Roberto Carballes Baeno.
But in his second round match against Brandon Nakashima, who he had never beaten before, Rune looked completely out of sorts and cut a sad figure in the opening set of the match where Nakashima quickly raced to a 3-0 lead.
Now Rune has revealed what was at the heart of his performance.
“Furious and so sad at the same time,” Rune wrote on X. “Had a food poisoning and was unable to play today. One of my favorite places is Mexico and I love this tournament. Absolutely not the way I wanted it to end,” he added.
Also Casper Ruud and Tommy Paul was forced to withdraw from the tournament in similar circumstances.
Rune also lost in the first round of the ATP tournament in Buenos Aires when he crashed out in the first round to Mariano Navone 6-1, 7-6, and then later revealed that he caught a virus in the previous tournament in Rotterdam and was battling fever.
“Looking back, I think it was too early to play after my influenza last week. My shoulder was not working and the whole body seemed extremely vulnerable. I will take the time and get proper rest now. When the body is not there, the brain shuts down and I am just very sorry I couldn’t deliver what I wanted on court today. Sorry Argentina,” he wrote on X at the time.
Rune will now seek to recover before the ATP 1000 tournament in Indian Wells in March.
