Drake basketball coach Ben McCollum on Bulldogs win over Valparaiso
Hear from Drake men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum following the Bulldogs win over Valparaiso in a Missouri Valley Conference matchup.
The Drake basketball team won its sixth straight game Saturday with an overtime victory over Missouri State, 69-62.
The Bulldogs (18-2, 8-2 MVC) got out to a hot start, leading by 10 at halftime. But Missouri State battled back hard to take a small lead in the second half. Drake re-took the lead late in the game but the Bears countered to tie things up and send the game to OT.
Ben McCollum’s squad dominated overtime, outscoring Missouri State 14-7 in the extra period. Sophomore guard Bennett Stirtz led the Bulldogs with 18 points and a team-high four assists. Mitch Mascari was the only other Drake player to finish in double figures, posting 13 points and five boards.
While only two Bulldogs finished in double figures, nine total players scored points in the win. That helped contribute to a big discrepancy in bench points, with Drake winning that category, 21-7.
Drake is back in action Wednesday when it welcomes UNI to the Knapp Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
