Training for his next race in three or four weeks on the
road to Kentucky Derby 2025, futures favorite Barnes returned to the work tab
Saturday morning at Santa Anita.
The $3.2 million Into Mischief colt owned by Amr Zedan and
trained by Bob Baffert drilled five furlongs in 59.8 seconds on the fast main
track. It was the third consecutive weekly workout for Barnes since his victory
Jan. 4 in the seven-furlong, Grade 2 San Vicente.
Baffert said Saturday if all continues to go well this
month, Barnes will be pointed to either the Rebel (G2) on Feb. 22 at Oaklawn or the San
Felipe (G2) on March 1 at Santa Anita. Each of the 1 1/16-mile stakes will
be a win-and-you’re-in qualifier for the Derby as long as it has at least six
horses entered. Barnes has yet to start in a points prep or a two-turn race.
Getaway Car, a stablemate of Barnes who already has 16 Derby
qualifying points, worked five furlongs in 1:00.4. It was his fourth drill
since the son of Curlin finished second Dec. 14 in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2). Baffert said he has targeted the Feb. 22 Saudi Derby (G3) in Riyadh for the colt owned by the SF Racing partnership.
Nineteen horses in Kentucky Derby futures markets were on
the Saturday work tab. They are listed in order of their odds at Caesars
Sportsbook in Nevada.
