The Raleigh Police Department (RPD) confirmed Friday afternoon that one man is dead, another man is in critical condition and one man has non-life-threating injuries after a shooting at the North Hills shopping center area.

Newsweek has reached out to RPD via email Friday afternoon for comment.

Context

Before 11 a.m., dozens of officers converged on the shopping center located in the 4300 block of The Circle at North Hills Street. According to RPD, a man entered Coquette, a French restaurant at the shopping center, and fatally shot another individual. The shooter then turned the gun on himself and was critically injured. A third man who was nearby also sustained gunshot wounds, but his injuries are not life-threatening, RPD said.

What to Know

At an afternoon press conference, Raleigh police chief Estella Patterson said that all shots were fired inside Coquette. According to Patterson, the shooting seemed to arise from a dispute between the individuals involved, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

What They’re Saying

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein posted on X, formerly Twitter: “I have talked with Chief Patterson and offered whatever assistance she may need from the state. For the time being, please stay away from the area and stay tuned to local law enforcement for more information.”

Patterson at Friday’s press conference: “This is a troubling event. Our hearts go out to the victims and those involved.”

A former Coquette employee, who was at a nearby restaurant when the shooting occurred, told WRAL TV: “I can’t wrap my mind around it [that it] happened at Coquette or at North Hills for that matter. I’m very intentional with places I choose to work for safety … it’s just mind blowing. Are we safe anywhere anymore? This was the last thing I thought I would have to think about today.”
