The Eastern Michigan University women’s golf team wrapped competition at the 2024 Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., Tuesday, Oct. 8, with Savannah de Bock finishing in a four-way tie for second place in the two-day event played at the Lawrence Country Club. As a team, the Eagles finished 12th overall in the event hosted and won by the University of Kansas.
How It Happened
Individually, de Bock (Ecaussinnes-d’enghien, Belgium/Institut de l’Enfant-Jésus-Lycée/Georgia) continued her hot play as she tied for runner-up honors with a 3-under 213 (72-71-70) as she climbed from a tie for eighth to the second spot in the final round. De Bock fired three rounds at or under par for the second tournament in a row and 8-of-9 total rounds played in 2024 to sit at a combined 17-under on the season. Additionally, her 213 total ranks as her second-best score of the year with the score ranking third all-time in program history. She now owns three of the top 4 marks in program history, including her school-record 204 at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic (Sept. 23-25) and her season-opening 214 at the Leadership & Golf Invitational (Sept. 16-17).
Two Eagles tied for 45th as Julianna Go (San Juan, Philippines/St. Jude Catholic School/King) and Mariana Vega (Barranquilla, Columbia/Colegio Karl C. Parrish) each shot 17-over, 233. Go posted rounds of 77-79-77 while Vega tallied rounds of 80-75-78. Riley Kim (Aldie, Va./Lightridge) tied for 58th at 24-over, 240 (80-77-83) while Amaya Melendez (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) tied for 64th at 31-over, 247 (81-85-81).
As a team, Eastern shot 53-over in the tournament while posting a score of 917 (309-302-306) to place 12th in the 13-team competition.
Historical Notes
» Savannah de Bock has played nine rounds over three tournaments for the Eagles and shot par or better in eighth of those rounds, including the last six consecutive rounds. For the year, she is a collective 17-under.
» Savannah de Bock finished with a 213, which ranks as the third-lowest tournament score in program history. She now owns three of the top four marks in program history, including a school-record 204 and a 214.

Eastern will take two weeks off before competing in its next event, the 2024 Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Kapolei, Hawaii, Oct. 21-23. The three-day event will be played on the Kapolei Golf Course.
