Yet it is David Beckham’s increasing closeness to another famous family that has revived the possibility that he might be getting closer than ever to receiving a knighthood.
So far, the great honour has proved elusive for the former England captain.
His quest was not helped by a series of emails leaked in 2017 which appeared to show the footballer’s frustration at being passed over for a knighthood in 2013.
The private missives, which Beckham dismissed at the time as inaccurate and misleading, railed against the “unappreciative” honours committee, with a few expletives thrown in for good measure.
