Jannik Sinner will be banned from competing until May after accepting a three ban from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Sinner cannot return until the Italian Open, after twice testing positive for the banned substance clostebol.
The world number one has been insistent that these tests came as a result of a contamination, with Sinner since changing some of his team members as a result.
Despite being unable to play any matches on the ATP Tour, Sinner is able to practise at a major venue until his return.
There has been a huge reaction to Sinner’s ban, with many players vocalising their disapproval at the decision.
Nick Kyrgios has been very outspoken against Sinner since it was first announced that he tested positive for clostebol last year.
When speaking on the Tennis Insider Club Podcast, Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill has explained how his player has coped with the backlash and revealed what he told him.
“This is what he loves doing, this is his purpose in life, to get up there and compete and play hard and enjoy himself so it has been remarkable,” said Cahill. “I think he gave me this quote, I didn’t tell him this quote, this is coming from a 23-year-old. Because we have been talking about all the noise, some from players, some from coaches, some from the media.
“Around his particular case. His is an involuntary contamination, so a lot of the times you return a positive test is from medicine or supplements. So it’s voluntary contamination. There is always a ban that applies to that, whether it’s one month or a little longer.
“His is involuntary and not only is it involuntary but it’s from a person who gave a spray to treat to physio for a cut finger and somehow that got pushed across to Jannik.
“But he said to me the other day, ‘Don’t concern yourself with the criticism of someone you wouldn’t take advice from.’
“I am looking at him thinking are you 23 years of age? I know that’s a quote that is out there but to come from him, it’s like okay, let’s move on. He is a mature young man, he is a good young man and I know Italy is very proud of him and they should be.”
This is not the only big doping case that has taken place in recent months, with Iga Swiatek also receiving a ban like Sinner last year.
Both players have been very strong in declaring their innocence, with Sinner releasing a statement in the immediate aftermath of receiving his three month ban.
“This case had been hanging over me now for nearly a year and the process still had a long time to run with a decision maybe only at the end of the year,” said Sinner.
“I have always accepted that I am responsible for my team and realise WADA’s strict rules are an important protection for the sport I love.
“On that basis, I have accepted WADA’s offer to resolve these proceedings on the basis of a 3-month sanction.”
Sinner will return to the matchcourt at his home Masters 1000 tournament, the Italian Open, that begins on Monday March 3.
