Daniil Medvedev’s 2024 season is now following his elimination from the ATP Finals.
The Russian needed to win his final round robin match in Turin to give himself a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.
But the World number one has become Medvedev’s kryptonite, and defeated him for the eighth time in nine meetings. Sinner’s 6-3, 6-4 victory means Medvedev cannot make the semi-finals.
Furthermore, the Italian became the youngest player to reach the semi-finals at the ATP Finals as World number one since Andy Roddick in 2003.
Daniil Medvedev found himself a set and a break down against Jannik Sinner at the ATP Finals, he reeled off three straight games to level set two.
But going ahead 3-4, Sinner gathered himself and proceeded to win three games in a row to complete the victory in one hour and 13 minutes.
Post-match, commentator Laura Robson assessed Medvedev’s performance and believes he failed to employ a tactic which could have been effective against Sinner.
“There was a drive volley in particular where I thought ‘oh maybe he is going for a bit more’. But he couldn’t sustain that as it’s not as comfortable for him but also Sinner is just unreal at passing shots,” Robson told Sky Sports.
“It didn’t feel like Medvedev was able to find enough space to play net play and really aggressive tennis, if that is what we are thinking he is going to do next year and he also come unstuck with the second serve, which was sitting up a bit too much for Sinner to get on top of.
“Equally there was a few returns that I felt Medvedev could have gone bigger on, because Sinner’s second serve was sometimes bouncing a bit shorter in the box and bouncing up for Medvedev to potentially take on.
“But I felt like maybe he could have run a bit more with the momentum when he did break back in the second set and it looked like Sinner’s game dipped a bit, when he maybe lost a bit of concentration but he didn’t capitalise.”
Sinner reached the last four at the ATP Finals without losing a match for the second successive year.
With his ninth victory in a row, the two-time Grand Slam winner has equalled Alexander Zverev with 68 wins in 2024.
“I’m trying to find new ways to improve as a player,” Sinner said post-match. I’m trying to win as many matches here as I can. Me and Daniil, we know each other very well.
“So, every time we step on court, we try to change something tactically. I felt like I was ready to see what he was going to do today.
“I know what I have achieved during this year, so I try to step on court with a good mindset. I have beautiful people around me who support me daily, which for me is really important. I try to enjoy my time on the court.”
