Daniel Craig stopped working on other projects during his time as James Bond because he “didn’t have the head space”.
The 56-year-old actor – who portrayed the suave spy in five movies between 2006 and 2021 – feels “very privileged” to be able to be selective about the roles he takes on now but insisted he doesn’t have a “game plan” when it comes to his career.
Speaking about his latest role in ‘Queer’, he said: “It took a while before I did other jobs around Bond and then I just stopped doing it because I just didn’t have the head space.
“And I feel like the longer I do this job, you’ve got to go where your heart goes and let that lead you.
“I’m very privileged to be in a position not to have to work as much as I used to, but if I do a job, I want it to be like this. I want it to be the best thing I can do.
“I wish I could say, ‘Yeah, I’ve got a game plan’, but I’m making it up as I go along.”
The ‘Knives Out’ star can next be seen playing William Lee in ‘Queer’, an adaptation of William S. Burroughs deeply personal novel, and he found himself growing fascinated with the Beat Generation writer, making it easier to connect to his character.
He said: “I saw him as someone struggling to find love in a very difficult time when homosexuality was illegal in the US and people had to go elsewhere or had to hide away or going into really, really difficult situations.
“And then it just becomes about humanising somebody, so that you can get to that first day of filming and not be s******* yourself.”
