SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Traveling over long weekends is something many people tend to do during holidays, especially on Labor Day, AAA expected travel to reach record numbers this weekend.
But as more people hit the road, it becomes increasingly more dangerous.
Around the Coastal Empire, and across the state, the Georgia Department of Public Safety says that since Friday there has been a total of 17 fatalities as a result of car wrecks, with 3 deaths right here in our viewing area.
One of the first and most horrific of the weekend was a triple fatality in Evans County.
The wreck involved a van and an SUV that collided killing 3 people, sending one to Savannah’s trauma center and another to a local hospital.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, since the long holiday weekend started this past Friday ,there have been fatalities reported in Evans County, Putnam County, Richmond County, Valdosta, Hartwell, Thomasville, Lafayette, Tifton, Brunswick, Dunwoody, Pike County, Bibb County, and Rockdale County.
The past 78 hours have been a fun getaway from reality for some but for other families, it will be a holiday full of grief from this day forward.
According to last year’s data 26 people were killed on the road last labor day weekend.
