Former Patriots center Dan Koppen has been named the new head coach of the La Salle Academy football program, bringing with him a wealth of experience from both his collegiate and professional careers. A Boston College alum and two-time Super Bowl champion with the Pats, Koppen is eager to instill the leadership, discipline, and work ethic that defined his playing days into the storied Rhode Island high school program.
Koppen, who played at Boston College from 1999 to 2002, was a key figure on the Eagles’ offensive line. His standout performance at BC earned him a spot in the 2003 NFL Draft, where he was selected by the Patriots in the fifth round.
Stepping into a starting role as a rookie, Koppen became an anchor on New England’s offensive line, protecting Tom Brady and contributing to three Super Bowl appearances and two championships. Over 11 seasons in the NFL, 10 with the Patriots, he was known for his toughness, intelligence, and leadership—qualities that will now shape his coaching philosophy at La Salle Academy.
“During my 11 years in the NFL, I had the privilege of working alongside some of the most talented players and coaches in the sport,” Koppen said. “Being part of great teams taught me invaluable lessons about leadership, teamwork, and perseverance.”
La Salle Academy, founded in 1871, has a long tradition of athletic and academic excellence. The school, located in Providence, Rhode Island, is one of the state’s premier college preparatory institutions, emphasizing faith, service, and community. The football program, which has been a dominant force in Rhode Island high school sports for over a century, now looks to build upon its success under Koppen’s leadership.
Koppen’s former coaches, including Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Boston College head coach Bill O’Brien, have praised his ability to connect with players and create a winning culture.
“He embodies so many of the incredible traits that a successful football coach must have,” said McDaniels, recently named Patriots offensive coordinator for a third time. “He was a flag carrier for our culture… He was one of our hardest workers. He is unselfish and put the team first in everything he did. He is an elite communicator who helped all others do their jobs well around him.”
Now, Koppen is set to lead La Salle with the same championship mindset that made him a standout at every level.
