Dan Fogelman is expanding his footprint on Hulu with a third series. The streamer has handed a series order to an hourlong project written and executive produced by the This Is Us creator.
Like was the case with Fogelman’s previous creation for Hulu, a series starring This Is Us’ Sterling K. Brown that eventually was named Paradise, the new project does not have a title or official premise. It is believed to be a sprawling drama set inside the world of the NFL with a generational family component.
After Hulu’s murder mystery comedy Only Murders In the Building, which he executive produces, and the upcoming thriller Paradise, which he created and executive produces, Fogelman is returning to the multi-generational family drama genre that was at the heart of This Is Us. But while NFL was an occasional backdrop for This Is Us — with the Pittsburgh natives Pearsons all Steelers fans — the league is expected to be featured prominently in the new series.
Sorting out NFL’s involvement is why the deals for the pickup took a couple of months to close and why 20th Television, where Fogelman is under an overall deal, will be the studio alongside Skydance Sports. The NFL and its NFL Films subsidiary two years ago formed a joint venture with Skydance Sports to create a production studio for scripted and unscripted content.
Executive producing alongside Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal of Rhode Island Ave. Productions are David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold, and Jason T. Reed for Skydance Sports.
Fogelman, a lifelong New York Giants fan, took a similar approach with the cult 2016 Fox baseball drama series Pitch, which he co-created and executive produced. It too was done with the cooperation of MLB.
This is Us was the No. 1 broadcast drama for its six-season run on NBC. Only Murders in the Building, currently in its fourth season, is Hulu’s most watched original comedy series. Fogelman also created and executive produced the ABC comedy series The Neighbors and Galavant. He is repped by WME and attorney Bruce Gellman.
