Aussie allrounder Beau Webster has been called out for a silly act after making a vital catch for Australia as Nathan Lyon created Aussie cricket history. Webster was brilliant for Australia on day three having made a number of small efforts to help his team.
Webster made 31 off 62 balls to help Australia post 414, before he took a wicket with his off spin to hand him his first scalp in international cricket. Although it was a moment in the field that had cricket fans in disbelief.
Angelo Matthews was on 76 and was looking to help Sri Lanka fightback from an ominous position in their second innigs. However, he whacked Lyon high and square as the ball went towards the Webster in the deep.
The towering allrounder made great ground and took a diving catch as he rolled across the grass to gather momentum. And in doing so, Webster threw the ball up-in-the-air to celebrate an outstanding catch.
Although not everyone was convinced he took the catch by the letter of the law. Webster hadn’t stopped his momentum of rolling in the motion of taking the catch.
He threw the ball up in the air before getting to his feet as he was still rolling. While the umpires were happy with the effort, and Webster did have control, many felt the decision to celebrate so early was silly. There have been many cases in cricket where the fielder has been denied a catch for celebrating too soon and making a mistake.
Most recently, Ben Stokes dropped the ball in the Ashes after attempting to celebrate too quickly. Many felt Webster was fortunate to escape with the catch, which proved a pivotal moment to break the fourth-wicket Sri Lankan partnership.
Angelo Mathews worked so hard, stumps so close and plays that shot.
Australia were toiling a little.
Oh man what a pair of hands Beau Webster has. Risky throwing the ball away that soon but was in total control of the catch.#SLvAUSpic.twitter.com/LEgr9RUgVe

Great catch by big Beau, but why why why throw it away so soon after catching it? You’ve spent all afternoon willing the batter to hit it you – the last thing you want is questioning by the umpire about your control of the ball…

That was pretty stupid from Webster to throw the ball so early. Could’ve been costly!

#srivaus Was quite surprised Matthews didn’t stand there after that Webster catch seeing he didn’t have full control of his body when he threw the ball up. Had it been the other way around Aus commentators would surely speak on that

Great catch by Beau Webster. Anyone else think he threw the ball up quickly as well? #SLvAUS

Lyon has become just the third Australian to reach 550 wickets for his nation after dismissing Dinesh Chandima in Sri Lanka’s second innings. Lyon finished the day with 3-80, but it was moving up the ranks into third behind Glenn McGrath’s total of 563 wickets that has excited the bowler.
Lyon has a real opportunity to overtake McGrath by the end of the calendar year, but sits well behind cricket icon Shane Warne in the tally. Lyon admitted he was proud of his effort having taken his first wicket on debut in Galle nearly 14 years ago.
“I hate talking about it but it is something I’m extremely proud about,” Lyon said of his record. “It’s pretty cool when you look at it. When I debuted 14 years ago or whatever it was, I didn’t think I’d take 550 wickets. To pick up that one here is very special.”
Incredibly, Lyon revealed it was veterans Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey who gave him some career advice that has remained with him. “That was a long time ago,” he said.
“I was pretty raw, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I just remember Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey just came up and said, ‘Have a bit of fun, trust your skill and bowl your best ball’.” Australia will look to wrap-up the series with a 2-0 victory on day four as Sri Lanka lead by 54 runs with just two wickets to spare.
