Could Bengals surprise and keep struggling position the same?

The Cincinnati Bengals feel like a team headed for a big overhaul of the interior offensive line in front of Joe Burrow this offseason.

That’s especially the case at the guard spots, where Cordell Volson wound up benched and Alex Capp nosedived to the point of being a cut candidate.

But recent comments from offensive line coach Scott Peters might reveal that things aren’t so cut and dry, especially when it comes to Volson.

“He’s physical. He’s got length. I think just helping him find ways to utilize his tools better is one of the areas of (improvement),” Peters said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “And you can do that through drilling and kind of emphasis on certain things where we think we can help him. But I think there were some things where hand placement was something that was difficult. Some of the set angles and just having the ability to capture cloth with his hands. It’s something that we put a big premium on.”

As Hobson pointed out, Peters was a member of the Cleveland Browns and coached an All-Star game where he first encountered Volson, a prospect he really liked.

Granted, this is what else would he say? territory at this point of the offseason. Peters’ commentary is certainly balanced with the way he points out the struggle points.

The Bengals could easily hunt for an upgrade, not find it and give it another go with Volson in 2025. That, or he becomes a super-experienced backup with areas of his game Peters wants to boost.

Either way, new coaches in key spots continue to hint that some unexpected players could return to big roles.
