Despite priding myself on having seen every popular early 2000s rom-com, I only got around to watching “Confessions of a Shopaholic” (2009) for the first time last October. For those who have not seen the film, the movie follows the “shopaholic” Rebecca Bloomwood who finds herself writing an advice column for a financial magazine which is ironic because her love of shopping puts her deeply in debt. The film may not be the most acclaimed — with a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes — but it is an inspiration for the column you are reading right now.
While Rebecca Bloomwood’s column appeared in a financial magazine, mine will be appearing here, in a college newspaper, which is probably for the best, considering I have never taken a finance class and barely survived Economics 5, so I have zero qualifications to give people financial advice. Consider this column a mix of fashion, style and lifestyle advice/tips from someone who shops a lot.
Now, you might be wondering, “Ryan, why should I be listening to you for advice on these topics?” First and foremost, I shop a lot, and throughout my years of shopping experience, I have made some great purchases and also some awful ones — so if anything, I hope I can at least deter you from making the same purchasing mistakes that I did. Second, when it comes to style and fashion, my friends tend to say I have good style — and I like to think so as well. Also, half of my phone screen time is on the Vogue app, and I spend an excessive amount of time in class reading Vogue and GQ.
So, if you want to read fashion tips from a 22-year-old who has a stack of Vogue magazines in his bedroom or general college advice about things like what you should purchase to keep in your school bag, then this is the place for you.
