GRANGER, Ind. (WNDU) – The Juday Greek Golf Course is nothing short of a regional landmark. The course is popular for golf itself, but also as a venue for big events in the neighborhood.
But the sights and sounds at the course Monday morning were not the typical ones.
“I woke up to firetrucks and ambulances coming down our road, and we walked down here,” said Devlin, who lives one block away from the course. “And all we could see was just smoke at first, and we didn’t realize it was going to be so big.”
The inferno at the course’s clubhouse is having a significant impact on the surrounding community. Neighbors like Craig Scheu, who has lived and worked at the course for 34 years, can’t believe what happened Monday morning.
“It’s kind of devastating,” Craig said. “You just don’t feel like something like that will happen. You see it on TV, but you don’t think it will happen to you. But it does.”
And for his wife, Susie, the loss felt personal.
“It just brought tears to my eyes,” Susie said. “I couldn’t believe it. It was like watching something you love die.”
And whether it’s been 30 years or eight months in the neighborhood, the sentiment is the same: people are devastated by the loss.
“We really fell in love with the neighborhood because of the golf course,” said Anne Johnson, who lives right behind the course. “We have a beautiful view of it. Haven’t lived here for very long, but it was devastating to watch.”
The owners of Juday Greek Golf Course says they plan to rebuild in the future.
But for now, they’ll have temporary headquarters in place soon that will allow guests to continue playing golf.
