The milestones continue for Longhorns football legend Colt McCoy.
One day after announcing his retirement from the NFL to join NBC’s college football broadcast team, McCoy was inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor.
The 13-year NFL veteran headlines a class of inductees that includes longtime men’s golf coach John Fields, rowing legend Carie Graves, Olympic sprinter Karen Nelson Walters and Super Bowl champion Alex Okafor.
McCoy left Austin as the winningest quarterback in NCAA D-I history after becoming the first Texas signal caller to lead his team to back-to-back 12-win seasons. He threw a school record 13,253 passing yards and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy twice. In addition to winning a host of awards, McCoy led the Longhorns to a Big 12 championship and national title game appearance in his senior season.
He played for five different NFL teams from 2010-22 posting 7,975 yards through the air with 34 passing touchdowns and 32 interceptions. He found a role as a reliable backup later in his career, notably playing his best game as a professional in October 2014 against the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.
Fields is entering his 28th year at the helm of Texas men’s golf, which owns the longest current streak of consecutive NCAA championship appearances, with 17 stretching back to the 2007 season. Fields coached locals Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler, who have each won multiple majors and earned a world No. 1 ranking.
Graves, who died of early onset Alzheimer’s complications in December 2021 at age 68, is being inducted posthumously. As an athlete, Graves went to three Olympics, winning a gold and bronze medal, and was named U.S. Rowing’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1981 and 1984. The award was later renamed in her honor in 2022. Graves was named the head coach of Texas women’s rowing in 1998 after the conclusion of the program’s first season in 1997. In her 16 years at the helm, Graves built it up from a fledgling program to a five-time conference champion and two-time National Championship competitor.
Here are the other Longhorns inducted into the Hall: Reggie Freeman (Basketball, 1994-97), Marquise Goodwin (Football and Track & Field, 2009-12), Alex Okafor (Football, 2009-12), Omar Quintanilla (Baseball, 2001-03), Julie Cooper Bliemel (Swimming & Diving, 1989-92), Farley Taylor Lansing (Tennis, 1994-97), Mira Topic Losert (Volleyball, 2001-04), Lexy Bennett Skaggs (Softball, 2009-12) and Karen Nelson Walters (Track & Field, 1985-88).
The inductees will receive a special salute when Texas football plays ULM on Saturday, Sept. 21.
