Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders has a list of teams he won’t allow his son Shedeur to play for. No other QB in the 2025 class has a family member so intimately involved with his professional fate.
This isn’t unanimously a bad thing.
The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Tom Krasovic views Coach Prime’s protective parenting as a good thing for the “Grown QB” – especially considering the success Eli Manning had with the New York Giants after Archie steered him away from the Chargers and the lack of success San Diego had with Philip Rivers, who they settled for instead.
“Like it or not, Eli Manning was right in insisting he begin his NFL career with the Giants rather than the Chargers,” Krasovic wrote.
“Manning would win two Super Bowls with New York, and the Chargers never reached the big game with either Drew Brees or Philip Rivers.
“Similarly, Deion Sanders is wise to be discussing his son Shedeur’s fit with NFL teams ahead of the next draft, as he has, per the Hall of Fame cornerback’s recent comments to ‘The Dan Patrick Show.’
“The fit between a quarterback and team is so important that a QB projected for the first round should explore whether he can boost his odds of landing with a team that’s a better fit.”
Manning’s Giants career is a cautionary tale for front offices of NFL franchises with poor track records. In San Diego, that fateful 2004 draft day demand and trade was a massive what-if made worse by what ended up being for New York.
At the end of the day, Coach Prime is pulling a good father move. It just so happens he’s acting with unparalleled access due to his NFL connections.
It’s tough to put a PR spin on what seems like an overreach from the outside looking in.
History is on his side, though.
