The 2024 Southeastern Conference championship game is in the books.
No. 5 defeated Georgia defeated No. 2 Texas 22-19 in overtime in Atlanta to secure a first-round bye and spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff field. The Longhorns are still likely to make the playoff, but will still have to sweat out the selection show scheduled for noon Sunday on ESPN.
Tennessee is likely to remain locked into the top 12, as they were last week, but questions surround Alabama, ranked No. 11 in the penultimate CFP top 25, following the ACC title game. No. 17 Clemson beat No. 7 SMU to earn what is likely the fifth conference championship bid to the playoff, and it remains to be seen whether the selection committee will choose an 11-2 SMU team or 9-3 Alabama, which was idle.
Elsewhere, South Carolina, Ole Miss and Missouri were also idle this week, but should maintain their positions inside the top 25 and in prime position for top-tier bowl games. While being ranked inside the two polls still holds weight, all eyes will be on the final CFP rankings this week, as it will determine the 12-team field. But the polls this week should give a good indication of what to expect.
