The College Football Playoff picture is crystal clear after conference championship weekend wrapped up on Saturday. With that, CBS Sports writer Jerry Palm released his final predictions for the 12-team bracket, which is set to be announced Sunday afternoon.
Five teams have secured their spot in the CFP with their conference title wins: Arizona State, Boise State Clemson, Georgia and Oregon. Four of those teams will receive first-round byes while the fifth will likely compete against the No. 5 seed in the first round.
The first round games will take place on campus of the higher seeded team in each matchup. From there, the winners will advance to respective bowl games leading to the national championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Jan. 20.

Oregon defeated Penn State by a score of 45-37 on Saturday to claim the Big Ten Championship and remain undefeated. The Ducks are the only team in all of college football that has not lost this season and the easy pick for the top seed.
Dillon Gabriel finished that game with 283 yards and three touchdowns and is a candidate to be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He also has Oregon as the favorite to win the national championship in what is set to be his final season.
Georgia overcame an injury to starting quarterback Carson Beck as backup Gunner Stockton stepped in to lead it to a 22-19 overtime win against Texas in the SEC title game. The Bulldogs won the game on a touchdown from Trevor Etienne in overtime as Stockton completed all three of his passes and rushed for eight yards to set up the score from Etienne in the extra period.
This marks the fourth appearance for Georgia in the College Football Playoff. It won the national championship in the 2021 and 2022 season but missed the CFP in 2023 after losing in the SEC Championship.
Boise State breezed through the Mountain West on its way to a 21-7 victory against UNLV to win the league title on Saturday. The Broncos’ only loss this season came in Week 2 against Oregon, and they took the Ducks down to the wire before falling 37-34.
Running back Ashton Jeanty will make them a difficult out for any opponent they face. He has rushed for 2,497 yards and 29 touchdowns, ranking him fourth all-time in yards in a single season.
Arizona State cruised to a dominant 45-19 victory against Iowa State to win the Big 12 Championship and clinch its first College Football Playoff berth in program history. The Sun Devils got another big game out of running back Cam Skattebo, who rushed for 170 yards and scored three total touchdowns.
There was some question after their win whether they deserved to jump Boise State and get the final first-round bye as one of the four highest-ranked conference champs. However, with Clemson pulling off an upset of SMU in the ACC title game, both the Broncos and Sun Devils can likely expect to be in the top four.
Texas fell short in the SEC Championship game but is still expected to make it in the field as an at-large team. Palm predicts them as the No. 5 seed against a Clemson team that found its way into the bracket against all odds with a last-second field goal to win 34-31 in the ACC title on Saturday.
The Tigers led SMU by 17 points entering the fourth quarter and nearly squandered the game, but held on as quarterback Cade Klubnik threw for 260 yards and four touchdowns. They’re sure to enter this matchup hungry to continue their run through the postseason after many counted them out.
This prediction from Palm could cause some controversy as he believes Alabama will make it in as an at-large team over SMU. This comes despite the fact that not only do the Crimson Tide have more losses than the Mustangs, but they also did not play in their conference championship game.
It’s hard to say if the committee would actually leave SMU out considering it was still in position to win the ACC Championship. But at least in this prediction, the Crimson Tide win that comparison and will face Big Ten runner up Penn State.
This is an interesting potential in-state matchup that would surely draw a lot of intrigue in the first round. Notre Dame is the college football power but Indiana has been the Cinderella story of this season so far to win a program-record 11 games under first-year coach Curt Cignetti.
Hoosiers QB Kurtis Rourke has been electric after transferring from Ohio and leads the Big Ten with 27 passing touchdowns to only four interceptions. He would have a tough matchup, however, against a Notre Dame defense that ranks No. 4 in the country against the pass.
Ohio State had a chance to play for a Big Ten Championship this weekend but lost in the final game of the regular season to rival Michigan. That caused the Buckeyes to drop from No. 2 to No. 6 in the CFP rankings, and they could still potentially face conference champ Oregon in the quarterfinals.
Palm predicts that Ohio State will run into Tennessee in the first round, which would be only the second time in history the two teams have met. The Vols finished the year 10-2 in their first season with Nico Iamaleava as starting quarterback.
