Seton Hall suffered a second straight unfathomable loss on November 13. Hofstra escaped the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex with a 49-48 win over the Pirates – and college basketball pundits felt the loss was a damning sign for Seton Hall moving forward.
From the team’s 2024-25 prospects to their long-term NIL situation, every reporter responding to the loss on Long Island was deeply worried about something SHU-related. Some were worried about the Big East as a whole.
“Seton Hall with losses to Fordham and Hofstra in the first 10 days of the season. Pirates have one of the worst NIL situations in high-major basketball. Not an excuse to lose these ‘down’ games, but talent level just not where it needs to be,” Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney wrote.
“Seton Hall has lost consecutive games to Fordham and Hofstra. It’s looking like this might be the Pirates worst season since 2012-13 when they went 15-18 and 3-15 in the Big East. But honestly, it could be worse than that. This is Seton Hall’s worst offensive team in decades,” Tri-State College Basketball Podcast host Bryan DeNovellis wrote.
“The list of brutal losses for the Big East just keeps growing with Seton Hall losing to Hofstra tonight, massive divide between the top and bottom teams in the conference this season,” VSiN’s Greg Peterson wrote.
“Villanova has lost to Columbia and St. Joe’s. Seton Hall has lost to Fordham and Hofstra. Butler lost to Austin Peay. Big East Early Season Struggles,” The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman wrote.
Seton Hall was moving in the right direction last year after an up-and-down first season for Shaheen Holloway. But losing to Fordham and Hofstra in consecutive games makes it clear something is wrong with this program this season.
With players knowing their peers are making more, the Pirates’ locker room has obstacles keeping them divided. Holloway is not getting his players to buy into the bigger picture, though.
Having lost their lone Big East Tournament game last season by 19 to St. John’s and their 2022 matchup in an upset to DePaul, Holloway has little to hang his hat on thus far in South Orange.
And quickly, Seton Hall is losing relevancy in the sport.
