MATHEWS, La. – Two rounds are complete at the LaTour Intercollegiate as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad is in prime position to bring home some tournament hardware.
As a team, the Skyhawks rank second in the 12-team standings with a 573 (-3), trailing South Dakota (565, -11) by eight strokes. That included a 285 (-3) in Round 1 and an even-par 288 in Round 2. UT Martin leads the tournament in pars (115), fewest bogeys (31) and fewest double bogeys or worse (three).
Cole Isbell resumed his stellar freshman campaign today, carding a 141 (-3) to rank fifth in the field of 72 golfers. The Cumming, Ga. native was tied for the tournament lead with a bogey-free 68 following the morning round before tallying a 73 during the afternoon session. Heading into tomorrow’s third and final round, he paces the whole field with 26 pars while ranking sixth in the event in par-4 scoring average (3.95, -1). LSU’s Nick Arcement sits atop the tournament with a 136 (-8).
The Skyhawk duo of Garrett Chumley (142, -2) and Jackson Twerdahl (143, -1) are also in the top-15 of the standings after two rounds. Chumley finds himself in 12th place, ranking sixth in the field in par-3 scoring (3.00, E) while Twerdahl is 15th overall as the pair accounted for a team-best eight birdies apiece today. Twerdahl’s 4.38 (-5) par-5 scoring average is good enough for the fourth-best mark in the event.
During Round 1, Cole Isbell tied his brother Dax Isbell (74, +2) for the team lead with four birdies each. Chumley carded a 71 with three birdies while Twerdahl posted an even-par 72 that included three red scores.
Chumley and Twerdahl both had five birdies each in the second round, tying for the team lead with matching 71’s (-1). Chumley ended on a tear, birdieing each of his final four holes of the day. Dax Isbell (three birdies) and Cole Isbell (one birdie, one eagle) completed the team scoring with identical 73’s.
Overall, Dax Isbell shot a 147 (+3) today while Jonathan Xoinis registered rounds of 77-75 for a 152 (+8) that included two birdies. Jaden Morrell is also competing as an individual, managing a score of 153 (+9) with four birdies – two apiece in Round 1 (79, +7) and in Round 2 (74, +2).
An 8 a.m. shotgun start is ahead for tomorrow’s Round 3 as the five members of the Skyhawk scoring lineup will open the day on Holes No. 1-5 while Morrell will tee off of Hole No. 6.
