Coco Gauff has a tough task ahead of her as she prepares to take on Iga Swiatek in Tuesday’s blockbuster meeting at the WTA Finals. The world number two and three will battle it out in a critical Orange Group showdown, which could see one of them secure their place in the semifinals.
Gauff started her run in Riyadh perfectly with a straight-sets win over frequent doubles partner Jessica Pegula. The two last partnered at the 2024 Paris Olympics but were unable to make it past the second round.
Swiatek, who is fighting to both defend her 2023 title and reclaim the world number one spot, will face Gauff after a thrilling opening win over Barbora Krejcikova. Gauff and Swiatek are no strangers to each other, so fans can expect an exciting meeting between the two.

Gauff enters the clash after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Pegula in her first WTA Finals match. Swiatek came from a set down to beat seven-time Grand Slam doubles champion Krejcikova 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
This is the first time the Polish superstar has competed since the US Open, where she was eliminated by Pegula in the quarterfinals, who came second to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. The current world number one has since leapfrogged Swiatek in the rankings and is the favourite to keep her spot at the top of the tree, regardless of whether she wins the WTA Finals or not.
Gauff has won 10 of her last 11 matches, including the WTA 1000 China Open title in Beijing, followed by a semifinal appearance in Wuhan.
Gauff won her first Grand Slam singles title in poetic fashion. The Atlanta-born star lifted her maiden major title on home soil after triumphing at the 2023 US Open, beating the likes of Elise Mertens and Caroline Wozniacki before snubbing Sabalenka in the final.
Just 19 at the time of her victory, Gauff became the first American teenager to win the US Open title since Serena Williams in 1999. Gauff also won her first Grand Slam doubles title this year alongside Katerina Siniakova. The pair charged to the 2024 French Open trophy and since the milestone moment, Gauff has revealed she will be playing fewer doubles matches moving forward.
Swiatek won her first Grand Slam title back in 2020 at Roland-Garros and wrote her name in the history books. The 23-year-old became the first Polish player to win a major title and the lowest-ranked French Open champion in the history of the WTA rankings, at 54th in the world at the time.
Since her breakthrough title, Swiatek has won a further four Grand Slams, an Olympic bronze medal and the 2023 WTA Finals.
Gauff and Swiatek have played each other on 12 occasions already, and the record is very much in the latter’s favor. Swiatek dominates with 11 matches won to Gauff’s one, including three blockbuster encounters at Roland-Garros. The four-time French Open champion beat Gauff in the 2022 final, the 2023 quarterfinal and again this year in the semis.
Swiatek has also won two WTA Finals matches against the world number three, as well as victories in Rome, Miami, San Diego, Dubai and Beijing. Gauff’s win came at the 2023 Western & Southern Open, where she beat Swiatek in the semifinal before snubbing Karolina Muchova for the trophy. The occasion marked Gauff’s first WTA 1000 final and title, and her efforts crowned her the youngest champion in Cincinnati history.
