Coco Gauff has vowed never to make a specific purchase again after feeling “narcissistic”.
The world No. 3 is the latest athlete to be honoured with a custom Wheaties cereal box.
Gauff finally got her hands on the cereal when she returned from the Wuhan Open but she struggled with the idea of buying something with her face on it.
The 20-year-old appeared on the iconic orange Wheaties box back in August as part of the brand’s tradition of honouring sportspeople. It came at the perfect time, ahead of the US Open, but meant Gauff was too busy to get her own box.
After the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, the world No. 3 made a coaching change and headed to China, winning the WTA 1000 in Beijing before losing in the Wuhan semi-final.
It meant she only got to try the cereal earlier this week after returning home. But Gauff felt too “narcissistic” buying something with her face on it.
The eight-time title winner shared a snap to her Instagram story showing four Wheaties boxes in her trolley and wrote: “ngl buying something with your face on it feels narcissistic asf. I’m not doing this again lol.”
Although Gauff has been put off buying anything with her face on, she did enjoy the cereal. The 20-year-old took to TikTok to try it out for herself and it passed the test.
“We are going to taste text my Wheaties box cereal. Let’s go. Breakfast of champions,” Gauff said, showing the front and back of her custom box.
“Shoutout to Josh for helping with the box design, now we’re about to try the cereal. Vanilla almond milk is the best milk for any cereal.”
Last year’s US Open winner admitted she hadn’t eaten cereal in two months but she thoroughly enjoyed the Wheaties. “Mmm that’s really good,” she exclaimed as she took her first bite.
Gauff has been enjoying some downtime ahead of her final tournament of the season. The world No. 3 has qualified for the WTA Finals once again.
This year’s edition of the season-ending championships is being staged in Riyadh from November 2 to 9. This will be the first year in which Gauff is just playing singles at the tournament.
“I’m really happy to be qualified. I’m happy to be going there,” she said after losing in Wuhan.
“Honestly, going in it was like whatever happens happens. Obviously you want to do the more positive thing. I think it’s my third one in a row. It’s my first time not playing doubles, so that’s going to be a different experience.
“But I’m excited. I’m looking at dresses. They have a lot of things planned for us. I’m super excited. Yeah, I heard it’s going to be great, so I’m excited.”
