Coco Gauff will take on Iga Swiatek in the final of the 2025 United Cup as the 2023 champions, the USA, are slated to face the 2024 runner-up, Poland. In the men’s singles, USA’s Taylor Fritz is expected to face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.
World No. 3 Gauff, who ended 2024 with a WTA Finals title, has carried her dominant form into 2025. She has not dropped a set in singles at the event and delivered another commanding performance in the semifinal on Saturday, January 4, defeating the dangerous Karolina Muchova.
Gauff entered the match with a 3-0 head-to-head record against Muchova and extended it to 4-0 with a decisive 6-1, 6-4 victory in under 90 minutes.
In the men’s singles, Fritz faced Tomas Machac in a closely contested match. The Czech edged out a win in the first-set tiebreaker, raising hopes of forcing a third match in the tie. However, Machac, who had struggled with cramping in earlier matches, was unable to continue and retired with the score at 7-6(4), 5-6.
During a post-match press conference, Gauff was asked how she feels about the challenge of facing World No. 2 Swiatek in the final. The American expressed a positive feeling but admitted she has not thought about it much.
“Yeah, I’m feeling great. I felt like I was playing good today. Obviously Iga is a tough opponent. I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it too much yet. But yeah, I think it’s going to be a great level of tennis and super excited to go out there tomorrow and hopefully bring the Cup back home,” Gauff said.
Swiatek has also been in stellar form, winning all four of her matches at the event. This continues her unbeaten streak from last year, where she maintained a perfect record during Poland’s runner-up finish.
Coco Gauff reveals confidence is her key takeaway from previous encounter against Iga Swiatek at WTA Finals
Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek last met in November during the Round Robin stage of the WTA Finals. While Swiatek was returning from months of inactivity, Gauff had won the China Open a month before. Despite her challenging head-to-head record against Swiatek, Gauff remained composed and secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory in Riyadh.
During the aforementioned press conference, the 20-year-old asked what she learned from her match against Swiatek in Riyadh, specifically what worked well for her.
“I think just confidence. I was very confident in Riyadh. Yeah, I think when I’m playing confident tennis, that’s my best tennis. It makes it hard for her or anyone to really do anything. So tomorrow I’m just going to go out there and be confident,” Gauff said.
Ahead of their United Cup clash on Sunday, January 5, Iga Swiatek leads Coco Gauff 11-2 in their head-to-head. Swiatek won their first six encounters over two years, including a French Open final. Gauff then claimed her first win against Swiatek in Cincinnati in 2023, but Swiatek won the next four meetings before their WTA Finals showdown.
