Coco Gauff explains the biggest differences between the United Cup and other WTA tournaments.
The American chose to start her 2025 season by representing her country at the United Cup for the first time.
Coco Gauff thoroughly enjoys competing alongside her compatriots as she did at the Paris Olympic Games last summer.
This will also help the 20-year-old with her preparation for the Australian Open as she tries to add to her Grand Slam haul.
During 2024 several players spoke about the enjoyment they get from playing in team events, such as Gauff’s United Cup teammate Danielle Collins.
“I wish we had the team tournaments more often, it’s just a totally different energy,” the 2022 Australian Open runner-up told the New York Times via The Athletic in November.
“From being on the team with the girls and competing to the little gifts that you prepare and all the festive stuff that you try to do. It’s really like a holiday in a lot of ways.”
Now Gauff has explained what she enjoys about playing in team events, and is pleased to start her season with a tournament like the United Cup.
“Definitely a lot more relaxed on the changeovers, laughing a little bit more, you know, just talking. In general, things that we don’t get when we’re playing our regular tournament.
“I think it’s great to start the year off with this relaxed vibe, especially coming from the off-season, which is pretty chill. Yeah, I think this is a good transition into our regular schedule.”
Gauff is carrying on the momentum she built at the end of 2024 in 2025. The World number three won two of her final three events last season and has yet to lose at the United Cup so far.
The United States lost just one of their six group stages matches as they defeated Croatia and Canada with Gauff winning her singles matches against Shuai Zhang, Donna Vekic and Leylah Fernandez.
Gauff, who also won her two doubles matches alongside Taylor Fritz, is thoroughly enjoying her time at the Untied Cup and hopes to guide her team to victory.
“I’m having so much fun,” she added. “We have a great team, great vibes all around, and excited that we were able to move on to the next round of the tournament and hopefully all the way to the end.”
